Tedy Bruschi is hospitalized after stroke

- WIRE REPORTS

ATTLEBORO, Mass. — ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi, a former New England Patriots linebacker, is recovering in a Massachusetts hospital after having a stroke for the second time. In a released statement, his family said the 46-year-old Bruschi had the stroke Thursday and immediately recognized the warning signs of arm weakness, face drooping and speech difficulties. Bruschi was admitted to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where his family said Friday he was “recovering well.” Bruschi had a stroke in February 2005 — just days after the Patriots won Super Bowl XXXIX — and learned he had a congenital heart defect that produced a hole in his heart. He had surgery to repair the hole and retired from football but sat out less than a year before returning for the seventh game of the 2005 season. A third-round pick out of the University of Arizona in the 1996 NFL draft, Bruschi spent his entire pro football career with the Patriots and won three Super Bowls. He announced his second and final retirement just before the start of the 2009 season.

› TOKYO — Organizers of the 2020 Summer Olympics are putting “a few hundred thousand” tickets into a lottery next month for Japan residents who were shut out when results of the first lottery were announced in June. The new “second-chance” lottery is being organized on short notice because of unprecedented demand in Japan. Demand is believed to be at least 10 times more than supply, and probably more, which means few in the host country who want tickets can get them. Organizing committee spokesman Masa Takaya said on Friday that 3.22 million tickets were sold to Japan residents in the first lottery.

BASEBALL

› CLEVELAND — Pitchers Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians and Liam Hendriks of the Oakland Athletics as well as Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Max Muncy have been added to rosters for the MLB AllStar Game on Tuesday in Cleveland. Major League Baseball announced the changes Friday. Bieber and Hendriks will replace injured Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Charlie Morton and Texas Rangers left-hander Mike Minor on the American League roster. Muncy will fill the National League roster spot that belonged to the Washington Nationals’ Anthony Rendon, who chose to skip the game to rest nagging injuries.
