On a cold and rainy night, the Knoxville Webb Spartans blew out the Silverdale Baptist Academy Seahawks, 38-7, in their final regular-season football game of 2018.

The visiting Spartans’ path to a rout began on the first play of Friday’s game when quarterback Kaden Armes passed to Elijah Howard for a 63-yard touchdown.

“Our kids have been getting better all year,” Webb coach David Meske said. “We started off the year by losing some football games to some really good teams, but we have put in a lot of hard work and it has been paying off.”

After the Spartans’ quick score, the Seahawks began their opening possession on the 35, but it ended after three plays on an interception.

Webb capitalized on the turnover with a three-play 25-yard drive capped by a Jahlil Jefferson 9-yard touchdown run. That increased the Spartans’ lead to 14 points, but the drive was marred by a leg injury to Howard. The sophomore running back did not return. Later in the first quarter, the Spartans added three points on a 34-yard field goal by Cameron Fowler.

The scoring deluge continued in the second quarter on touchdown runs by Jefferson and Elijah Bane to make it 31-0, Spartans. The lead increased to 38 in the second half when running back Dominic Vance barreled into the end zone from the 9-yard line.

Webb finished the game with 263 yards rushing on 37 attempts. The Spartans had nine players run the ball, led by Vance with 92 yards.

Silverdale managed to end the shutout late in the game when Clay Buckley made a 6-yard touchdown run. Senior running back Curtis Dearing was the standout player for the Seahawks. In his last regular-season game, Dearing rushed for a team-high 54 yards and recorded eight tackles.

Friday’s game was the final tune-up for both teams before next week’s Division II-AA playoffs. Webb will host Chattanooga Christian School while Silverdale will play a road game.
