Mocs women finish second place in UNF Collegiate

With senior Megan Woods tying for sixth place individual­ly, the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s golf team finished second Tuesday in the UNF Collegiate tournament at the Jacksonvil­le Golf & Country Club.

The Mocs closed with a collective 296 for an 883 total for 54 holes, three shots ahead of Toledo in the 17-team field. Old Dominion won at even-par 864.

Woods’ 217 gave her a top-10 finish for the second straight tournament, and teammate Cristina Perez tied for 14th at 220. Monica San Juan, Holly Morgan and Maddy McDanel tied for 25th, 27th and 32nd at 224, 225 and 226.

The UTC men’s team, meanwhile, continued its day-by-day rise in Auburn’s Tiger Invitation­al at Opelika, Ala., and wound up 10th out of 17 teams at 879, two strokes out of ninth. The Mocs shot an even-par 288 Tuesday with Etienne Brault carding a 70 and Lake Johnson and Will Porter adding 72s.

Johnson tied for 11th individual­ly at 3-under 213, and Luke Long, Porter and Brault finished at 221, 222 and 223.

Ninth-ranked Auburn shot 839, 25 shots better than runner-up Georgia State.

Caswell honored

UTC senior Samantha Caswell was announced Tuesday as the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for Feb. 27-March 5. The former Baylor School star went 2-0 at No. 1 singles, including a three-set win that helped the Mocs edge East Tennessee State 4-3.

Caswell also won at No. 1 doubles with Emma Van Hee against ETSU.

Softball team busy

The UTC softball team is about to head to Clearwater, Fla., for 11 games Friday through March 18 in the USF Under Armour Invitation­al, but first the Mocs will host Belmont at 6 tonight in Frost Stadium.

This is the Mocs’ first meeting with the Bruins in six years, and the Nashville team is 11-3 with 10 wins in its last 11 games. UTC is 8-11 after going 1-4 at the Ole Miss Classic.
