Orville Roberts
Orville W. Roberts, 94, of East Ridge, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at his residence.
He was a loving father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Mr. Roberts was a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church.
A veteran of World War II, he was the recipient of the Bronze Star. He moved from Wisconsin to Tennessee in 1997 with his wife to be near their children. Mr. Roberts retired from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1983 following 29 years of service.
He was preceded in death by wife, Barbara J. Smith Roberts; parents, Arthur and Bertha Roberts; brothers, Willard and Jerry Roberts; sister, Ruth.
Survivors include his daughters, Susan B. (Don) Coulliette of East Ridge, Deborah A. (Dennis) Jolin of Webster, Mass., and Barbara J. Massa of East Ridge; grandchildren, Jennifer Coulliette Woodfin, Michael O. Coulliette, Jason M. (Kristina) Jolin, Christopher M. Lafranka, and David A. (Joanna) Fiala; seven great-grandchildren; one greatgreat-grandchild; many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Chattanooga in honor of their wonderful care.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Pilgrim Congregational Church. Mr. Roberts will lie in state one hour prior to service at the church.
Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Wanda Sholtz
Wanda Kaye Sholtz, 66, passed away Dec. 24, 2015, in her home in East Ridge.
She was born April 8, 1949, in Raleigh, N.C., to the late Alfred Norris and her mother, Doris Ann Norris, who is still living. Ms. Sholtz was a kind-hearted person who loved people. She enjoyed reading and watching her Hallmark Channel.
Along with her father, she is preceded in death by one brother, Allen.
Ms. Sholtz is survived by her mother; two sons, Ronnie Blair (Fawn Kitchens) and Michael Blair (Jennifer Carpenter); and her extended family, Wayne Blair and Jenny Blair; two brothers, Montgomery and Jimmy; and two granddaughters, Alexis Makenna Blair and Zoé Madison Monroe Blair.

Sidney Stephens, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, Jan. 1, 2016.
Sidney is in the Chattanooga Hall of Fame for softball. He was affiliated with the YMCA Swedes. Sidney was a deacon in the Rivermont Baptist Church.
Sidney was preceded in death by his mother, Ada Stephens, and father, Chester Stephens; bothers, Paul and Joe Stephens.
Sidney is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Beverly Stephens; daughters, Julie (Travis) Norton and Kim (Ricky) Smith; grandson, Christopher Bell; granddaughters, Lauren, Samantha, Kaley and Brooke Norton.

Ida Thompson
Ida Mae Thompson, 84, was called to her eternal home Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015, at her residence.
She was born in West Point, Ga., to the late Rufus and Mozelle Anderson. She moved to Chattanooga at an early age and attended
Chattanooga public schools. Ida retired from Planters after 20-plus years of dedicated service. She was a faithful member of First Baptist of Avondale until her health failed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Charles W. Thompson; parents, Rufus and Mozelle Anderson; son, Robert; sister, Mary Ruth Anderson.

James Kelly Townsend Jr., 57, of Chattanooga, died Monday, Dec.21, 2015. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Cynthia Ann Varnell, 59, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015, in a local hospital.
She was a 1974 graduate of Kirkman High School. She was employed at Blue Ribbon Daycare for 18 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin Varnell, and brother-in-law, Timothy Harris Sr.
Survivors include her mother, Nadine Varnell; sons, Travis Varnell, Marlon Varnell and Marcus Varnell; daughter, April Varnell; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Terrilyn (John) Abernathy, Tonya (Tracy) Jones, Lynda Harris, Sharon Varnell and Rhonda Varnell; brothers, Halbert Varnell, Melvin (Lisa) Varnell, Stephen (Andren) Varnell, Kevin (Lindsey) Varnell nell, all of Chattanooga; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives; dear friend, Eddie Hampton; and many others.

Charles Williams Jr.
Charles C. Williams Jr, 91, of Somerset, Ky., passed away Jan. 1, 2016, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Somerset to the late Charles C. and Mossie Wright Williams Sr. Charles was united in marriage to Betty Lee Gregory Williams. He was the General Chairman at IBEW, AFL-CIO and a WWII Veteran. Charles enjoyed horses, dogs and wildlife.
He is survived by his sons, Charles “Bill” C. Williams III (Rose), Ronald “Ronnie” Williams (Patricia), James Patrick “Pat” Williams, Curtis Lee Williams (Judy) all of Chattanooga, Terry Williams (Terri) of Towson, Md., and his daughter, Susan Diane Owens (Andy) of Chattanooga; sisters, Mary Cummins of Knoxville, Tenn., Charlotte Daughetee of Chattanooga and Beverly Gill (Earl) of London, Ky.; sister-in-law Barbara Williams of Somerset, Ky.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Robert “Bob” Williams and James “Jim” Williams; and sister, Eleanor Jackson.
Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 3, from 4-7 p.m. at Somerset Undertaking Co. & Crematory.

Mrs. Holland was a member of the Whitwell Church of God.

KIMBALL — Marjorie Ann Nelson McGraw, 86, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at her home.
The daughter of the late Rufus Lafayette and Ellen Mason Nelson, she was an inspector at the Pittsburg Knitting Mill for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Lynn McGraw.
She is survived by her sons, Billy Gene McGraw of Rossville, Ga., and Mike (Kathy) McGraw of Kimball; daughter, Sheila (Joe) McGraw of Lenoir City, Tenn.; sister, Lou Ellen Nelson of Kimball; grandchildren, Wendy Parrish, Greg McGraw and McKenzie McGraw; several great-grandchildren.

Tom Watson
SEWANEE — Tom G. Waton, a resident of Sewanee for the past 40 years, passed away Dec. 27, 2015. Born April 10, 1938, in Ardmore, Okla., Mr. Watson was the son of James Eugene and Juanita Todd Watson.
Mr. Watson earned his A.B. degree Magna Cum Laude in 1960 from Oklahoma Baptist University, his M.A. in 1961 from The University of Arkansas, his M.L.S from Simmons College, Boston, Mass., 1971 and an Honorary Alumnus from The University of The South in 1994. He taught at the University of Southern Mississippi, 1962-1967, Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., 1967-1968 and Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass., 1968-1973.
After receiving his M.L.S., Mr. Watson became the Assistant Director of the library at Bridgewater. In 1973, he became Director of the Library at Newberry College, Newberry, S.C. In 1976, Mr. Watson came to The University of The South in Sewanee as University Librarian. Mr. Watson became Assistant to Vice-Chancellor Robert M. Ayers in 1981, the Interim Dean of Administration for The School of Theology and Interim Director of the Education for Ministry Program from 1985-1986. In 1986, he became Vice-President of University Relations at Sewanee. After a heart attack and open heart surgery in 1994, Mr. Watson returned to the University Library as University Librarian until his retirement in 2004.
Mr. Watson continued to serve the University and the community after retirement when he was asked to return for several positions. He served as the Director of St. Mary’s Sewanee and the University’s Director of Archives and Special Collections.
Mr. Watson was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, serving as President, 2004-2005; EQB Club President, 1979-1980 and 2004-2005; Monteagle Rotary Club; Executive Board, St. Andrews-Sewanee Episcopal School Board Trustees; St. Mary’s Sewanee Conference Center Executive Board and Treasurer and Interim Director; Co-Chair of the Friends of DuPont Library, 2006-2008; the Sewanee Chorale, Treasurer; the Center for Ministry in Small Churches Board of Directors; Franklin County Foundations for Educational Excellence Board of Directors 1999-2004; Southern Tennessee Medical Center Board of Directors, serving as Vice-Chair 20012002; Franklin County Health and Educational Facilities Bon Board, Vice-Chair and Chairman 1998-2001; Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge USA, Board of Directors, 19851995, Treasurer, 1986-1995; Appalachian Ministries Educational Resources Center, Executive Board, 1985; Emerald-Hodgson Hospital, Sewanee Board of Trustees, 1983-1986, Franklin County Library Board of Trustees, 1984-1988; the Sewanee Civic Association, serving as President, 1981-1982 and Board of Directors 1980-1983; the American Library Association; Southeastern Library Association; Tennessee Library Association. He has been honored in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Outstanding Educators of America.
During his career in higher education, Mr. Watson mentored first-time academic library directors, worked on task force to create a shared on-line digital library for the Associated College of the South, created a formal organization of the directors of the libraries of the 35 member Appalachian Colleges Association and was elected a permanent member of the executive committee for the ACA in 1996, was a paid consultant for Berry College in Rome, Ga., the Salvation Army Training College in Atlanta, Ga., Codrington Anglican Theological College in St. John, Barbados, Newberry College in Newberry, S.C., and Montreat College in Montreat, N.C., served on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Accreditation visiting teams, and served on the American Library Association accreditation committee to accredit graduate library schools. Mr. Watson has also written many articles for publication and presented numerous papers at meetings, workshops, colleges and conventions.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gail H. Watson; sons, James Todd Watson and wife Virginia of Atlanta, Ga., and Thomas Gregory Watson and wife Helen of Lapine, Ala.; grandchildren, Katherine Elizabeth Watson, James Todd Watson Jr., Davlena Carmela Scales, and David Joseph Scales; sistersin-law, Ruth Hill Shelton and husband Gene, Connie Monroe Hill; four nephews and their families and several cousins.
Mr. Watson’s funeral will be in All Saints Chapel in Sewanee at 11 a.m. CST on Jan. 16, 2016, with burial in the University Cemetery.

Beverley was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and member of Gospel Way Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Fletcher Renfro; mother, Ann Renfro; brothers, Larry Renfro and Jim Renfro; and sister, Barbara Snyder.

RINGGOLD — Jack Edward Cole, 81, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2016.
Jack was born in Knoxville, Tenn., and was a lifelong resident of Ringgold.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of East Ridge church of Christ. Jack owned and operated Drum Service Incorporated for over 50 years.

ROSSVILLE — Henry Lee Harris, 62, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015.
He had lived in the Northwest Georgia area all his life and was a member of the Baptist faith. He was a dedicated Roll Tide fan, and enjoyed music, fishing, animals and race cars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Harris Jr. and Joetta Harris; son, Donnie Lee Harris; and brother, Terry Leon Harris.

TUNNEL HILL — Doris Louise Wimpy Jones Hullender, 80, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015.
She was born in Whitfield County to the late Homer and Vergie Davis Wimpy. She had been a lifelong resident of the Tunnel Hill community and was of the Baptist faith. She retired from Con Agra Poultry where she had worked for over 20 years.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, listening to Southern Gospel and Bluegrass music. She was a very giving, kind-hearted and caring person.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Jones Sr., grandson, Blake Reece; sisters, Betty Padgett, Eva Jean Harold, Charlotte Black, Mildred Harris; brothers, Doyle, Ronnie, Farris and Harold Wimpy.

Brenda Rittenhouse
ROSSVILLE — Brenda Sue Rittenhouse, 74, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at a local hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and North Georgia. Brenda loved her family, she had a green thumb, and was able to grow anything in her flower garden. She loved her Chihuahuas as well as all animals. Brenda had a wonderful sense of humor and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Fleda Henley; three brothers, David, Damon and Don Henley; sister, Connie Walker; and granddaughter, Crystal Erwin.

BRIDGEPORT — Jewell Dean Smith Grider, 80, passed away Jan. 1, 2016, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
Jewell was the daughter of the late Herbert Edward and Bertie Cantrell Smith. Born Jan. 14, 1935, in the Dorans Cove Community of Bridgeport, she was a Bridgeport High School graduate, Class of 1953.
Jewell had worked in the office at Pittsburg Knitting Mill and was a member of South Pittsburg Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Harold Nye Grider; children, Marion (Mary Miles) Grider, Janet (Jim) Thomas, Doyle Grider, Debbie (Sam) Durham; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Charles (Dianne) Smith.
Visitation will be noon2 p.m. CST today at Rudder Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
The Funeral Service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, in the funeral home chapel officiated by Barry Grider.

John Weaver
WEST JEFFERSON, N.C. — John D. Weaver, 93, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at Margate Health and Rehab Center.
John D. was born in Ashe County on Dec. 17, 1922, to the late Elihu J. and Bina Elliott Weaver.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, and was stationed in the Philippines on Leyte Island with the 1041st Army Engineers. Upon his return to Ashe County, he operated Weaver’s Garage in Smethport, and later founded Weaver Tree Farms with his son, John William Weaver. John D. was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed Upland hunting, fly fishing, shooting skeet, working in his vineyard, and spending time outdoors gardening. He cherished his many trips to Nebraska and South Dakota hunting and making memories with friends and family, as well as his fishing trips at Gentry’s Creek.
John D. was an active member of Smethport United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years and sang in the church choir. He always enjoyed music and fellowship with his church family and his large extended family. He proudly served on the Board of Directors for Ashe Federal Bank. He was a member of the International Order of Oddfellows, as well as Lansing VFW.
Mr. Weaver is survived by his wife of 59 years of marriage, Ruth Harless Weaver; a son John William Weaver and wife, Suzanne of West Jefferson; a brother, Jack Wayne Weaver of Charleston, SC; three beloved grandchildren, Will Weaver, Madison Weaver and Liza Weaver; a special nephew, Joe Shepherd, of West Jefferson; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Margaret Wannamacher officiating.
Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military rites.
