UTC soccer falls at Austin Peay

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s soccer team is heading into its home opener still searching for the first win of the 2014 season after losing 5-2 at Austin Peay on Sunday afternoon. UTC senior Crystal Mackezyk headed in a Brandy Herrera corner kick in the 11th minute and again in the 23rd minute with an assist by Logan Higgins to give the Mocs a 2-1 lead midway through the opening half, but the Lady Governors reclaimed the lead before the break and added two more goals in the second half for the win. Midfielder Natalie Irwin was forced to play goalkeeper after both the starting and backup keepers were lost to injury, and she made 10 saves as Austin Peay outshot UTC 25-10. UTC returns home to take on Tennessee Temple on Friday night at 7.

AUTO RACING John Ownbey of Cleveland won the 30- lap Late Model feature race Saturday night at Boyd’s Speedway, with Crossville’s Brett Wyatt second, and Bryan Pritchard of Harrison moved up from second as the official winner in the Crate Late Model class when Craig Burrows refused a postrace protest inspection. Ryan Gifford of Lexington, N.C., was the Crate runner-up. Booger Brooks in A-Hobby, Eric Hughes in B-Hobby and David Singleton of Lenoir City in Mini were other victors, with Josh Beagan, Lee Harbin and Danny Burnette their runners-up. The track will host the first leg of the Labor Day Triple Crown weekend for Super Late Models with a $3,000-to-win 50-lap special Friday night. Fort Payne Motor Speedway and Duck River Raceway Park will be the venues Saturday and Sunday night.
