Mounties win fifth straight

-

PROVIDENCE — For the second straight night, the Mount St. Charles hockey team beat a reigning state champion thanks to a late goal by a senior.

One night after beating reigning state champion Bishop Hendricken, the Mounties extended their winning streak to five games when senior center John Belisle netted an overtime goal in a 2-1 victory over Connecticut state champion Fairfield Prep at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Mount St. Charles (5-2 Division I) has now won five straight games headed into the start of the second half of the season Friday night against talented Smithfield at Adelard Arena. The Sentinels beat the Mounties to start the season, but Mount is a very different team now.

After sitting out the first seven league games because they moved back from the Mount Hockey Academy U18 team, seniors Chris Baxter and Alex Pratt played a big role in Sunday’s win over the Jesuits. Moses Brown transfer Jason Mandeville made just debut in goal, splitting the victory with junior Sean Trottier.

“Baxter and Pratt played great,” Mount coach Matt Merten said. “It was a hardfought game by both teams, Trottier and Mandeville split the game and both were outstanding.”

Senior forward Bryan Testa scored for the second straight game for Mount’s only goal during regulation.

WOONSOCKET — It wasn’t easy, but the reigning Division II champion Cumberland hockey team remained undefeated with a 3-2 victory over reeling North Smithfield at Adelard Arena.

Dominic Rousseau scored the go-ahead goal with one minute left in the second period and Troy Senn added what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the third period. Kole Sisson scored in the first period after the Clippers found themselves trailing for the first time since the season opener.

Cumberland (6-0 Division II) heads to Thayer Arena Friday night to take on Toll Gate, while North Smithfield looks to break a two-game losing streak Friday night against Coventry at the West Warwick Civic Center.
