Woonsocket throwers dominate
PROVIDENCE — Woonsocket senior throwers Jared Briere, Dilyn Cote and Jacob Greenless dominated the medal stand during indoor invitational meets and that theme has continued into the outdoor season.
Saturday, at the Knights of Columbus Relays at Relays at Conley Stadium, the trio of Division I-bound weight throwers took the top three spots. Briere, an indoor All-American, won the hammer throw with a toss of 203 feet, 2 inches. Cote followed with a throw of 192-8 and Greenless delivered a person best with a throw of 1920.
Lincoln’s Evan Grivers finished ninth with a top of toss of 175-10 and Woonsocket’s Derin Paskanik took 11th with a throw of 173.
Briere was atop the medal stand in the six-kilogram (13.2 pounds) hammer with a throw of 196-3. Cote (181-5), Greenless (171-2) and Grivers (155-2) were the only other competitions in the event.
Lincoln’s Garrett Doyle (183-3) finished second to Classical’s Jacob Furland (197-10) in the five-kilogram (11 pounds) hammer throw.
Lincoln senior Sam Andrews finished fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 154-7. Ponaganset AllAmerican Gianna Rao claimed the title with a throw of 166-9. Woonsocket’s Katrina Kurowski (ninth, 13-3), Marissa Henley (11th, 129-2) and Gabrielle Ribeiro (13th, 122-10) also competed.
Ribeiro was sixth in the three-kilogram (6.6 pounds) hammer with a throw of 141-6. Kurowski finished sixth with a toss of 141-4.
Cumberland finished 11th in the boys 4x1600-meter relay in a time of 20 minutes, 26.4 seconds. St. Raphael (21:00.7) finished 18th, Lincoln (21:49.4) finished 21st and Central Falls (25:06.1) finished 31st. Hendricken won the event in a time of 18:59.2.
