No. 1 Broncos lose first game of season to No. 5 Rams

NORTH SMITHFIELD — The Burrillvil­le/Ponaganset/Bay View Co-op hockey team lost its first game of the season Saturday night, and now the No. 1 Broncos will play for their season Monday night at Levy.

The Broncos led by a goal after one period thanks to tallies from Elizabeth Ng and Madison McCutcheon, but La Salle’s Krista Varrichion­e scored a goal in each of the final two periods to lead No. 5 La Salle/Moses Brown to a 3-2 win over the Broncos at Rhode Island Sports Center.

The third game of the series hasn’t been set yet because Levy Rink is the home rink for three teams that need to play Game 3s on Monday.

The Rams, who dropped a 2-0 decision to the Broncos Friday at Levy, scored their first goal of the series just 1:16 into the game when Liza Farnham fired a shot past Burrillvil­le senior goalie Abby Bassett, who made 24 saves in the defeat.

BPBV responded with a pair of goals in just 1:41, as Burrillvil­le’s Kat Takita found Bay View’s Ng for the game-tying goal at 5:57. McCutcheon netted the go-ahead g oal at 7:38.

Moses Brown freshman Asia Porter made 24 saves, including shutting down the Broncos over the final two periods.

Varrichion­e took a pass from Jen Rickard and tied the game just 1:44 into the second period and she won the game at 7:04 of the third after good work from Farnham.
