Former Calhoun star Culberson called back up to Majors
LOS ANGELES
— The Dodgers added a few more to the active roster before Monday’s game against the Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium, activating Josh Fields from the 10- day disabled list and calling up infielder Charlie Culberson from Triple-A.
The Dodgers now have 36 players on their active roster.
The former Calhoun High star Culberson, who hit the division-clinching walk-off home run in Vin Scully’s final home game last September, has been with Oklahoma City all season after getting sent outright to the minors in December.
Culberson hit .250/. 299/. 336 in 108 games in Triple-A this season. He gives the Dodgers another option at shortstop, with Corey Seager likely unavailable to start until at least the weekend. Seager, nursing a sore elbow, starts a throwing program on Monday that is expected to last 4-7 days.
Culberson had 13 doubles, three triples, four homers and 32 RBIs while playing at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.
Culberson started Monday night at short- stop. He went 0-for-3 in the start with a strikeout in the Dodgers’ 13-0 loss to Arizona.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred Brandon McCarthy on the 60-day disabled list, retroactive to July 21. McCarthy has made a pair of minor league rehab starts in the last two weeks, still dealing with blister issues. He will likely continue his rehab during minor league playoffs, either with Double- A Tulsa or Class- A Rancho Cucamonga.
McCarthy’s season isn’t technically over. He is eligible to be activated as early as Sept. 19. The right-hander has a 3.84 ERA and 3.33 FIP in 16 starts this season, with 66 strikeouts and 25 walks in 86 innings.
Fields was placed on the 10-day DL with a lower back strain on Aug. 27, retroactive to Aug. 25. Monday was the first day Fields was eligible to return.
The right-hander has a 2.68 ERA in 47 appearances this season, with 49 strikeouts and 14 walks in 47 innings, including 1.86 in 10 games in August.
The Dodgers on Monday also released outfielder Brett Eibner, who is out for the year after Tommy John surgery in August. He was designated for assignment on Friday.
