From college reports

Bethany Headrick and former Sonoraville High standout Rebecca Cheeks each had a double- double as Reinhardt’s women’s basketball team defeated visiting Warner, 62-49, Thursday night at the Brown Athletic Center to improve to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2007-08.

The Lady Eagles trailed 8-0 early, but RU would go on a 15-1 run over the final 4:32 of the opening quarter to take the lead for good. The beat rolled on in the second quarter as RU held the guests to just four points over the 10 minutes. The lead would get as high as 19 in the quarter when Erika Woodfin drained a 3-pointer with 2:40 left in the half, as RU would end up leading 30-13 at the halftime break.

Warner (0-2) would go on a couple of runs in the second half to pull within single-digits, but the Lady Eagles would do more than enough to keep the Royals at arm’s length. The guests pulled within nine, 34-25, but after a basket by Jada Hubbard, Reinhardt led 44-28 with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter. The lead would get as high as 17 in the fourth quarter for RU on two occasions, the last coming after a Bria White basket with 6:27 left that made it 51-34. Warner would pull within nine, 58-49, with 100 seconds to go, but a freethrow by Woodfin and a 3-pointer by the senior with 43 seconds left capped the scoring and gave RU a 62-49 win.

Headrick had 13 points to go with 10 rebounds, with Cheeks adding 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hubbard came off the bench to score 10, with White adding nine points in the second half. RU had 16 assists on 25 made baskets, with JessAnn Nix and Hubbard each getting three.

Cheeks scores 13 in Lee win

Paced by a big first quarter the Lee women’s basketball team delivered an 85-60 victory over Bryan College to the homecoming crowd at Walker Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Coming off the program’s first victory over a Division I school on Thursday against the University of Memphis there was very little hangover for the Lady Flames as they fired out to a 35-13 lead at the end of the first period and never looked back.

Freshman point guard Lindsey Roddy led the balanced scoring attack for Lee with 14 points to go along with six rebounds. Junior forward and former Sonoraville High standout Carrie Cheeks added 13 points in the paint and hauled in eight boards while freshman Maddie Long tallied 12 points and dished off five assists.

The Lady Flames would make it five total players scoring in double-figures as a pair of freshman, Taylor Boggess and Abby Bertram each had 11.

Rowe’s club registered 19 assists and committed 14 turnovers while forcing Bryan into 19 floor mistakes. The pesky Lee defense swiped 13 steals.
