Ernest Owens
Ernest Owens, age 85, of Calhoun, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2016 at his residence.
Ernest was born on Feb. 3, 1931 in Calhoun to the late A. C. Owens and Mae Mealor Owens. He was a member of Calhoun First Baptist Church, and served on the Board of Deacons. He was a member of the Oothcalooga Masonic Lodge # 154, F. A.& M.; was past president of the Calhoun Jaycees; and the Red Bud Alumni Association. He served in the United States Air Force. For many years, he sang with his brothers and sister in the gospel quartet, “The Owens Family.”
After military service, Ernest was employed by Lockheed Aircraft. Later, Ernest and his brother Arthur opened Roy’s Drive In. They also operated Pasquale’s restaurant in Gordon Hills Shopping Center. He was the owner operator of the Coal Yard, and then later partnered with Wilson Baxley in the Calhoun Home Furnishings Store. Owens Trash Service was his last business until retirement.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Keith Owens; three brothers, Arthur Owens, James Owens, and Charles T. Owens; and two sisters, Christine Balliew and Dorothy Owens.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Jean Owens of Calhoun; daughter, Kelly Fuquea and her husband, Kenny; brother, Kenneth Owens and his wife, Debbie, of Calhoun; four sisters, Pauline Davis of Calhoun, Dolly McEntyre of Calhoun, Linda Galloway and her husband, Jimmy, of Calhoun, and Dimple Darnell and her husband, Edward, of McDonough; and two grandchildren, Owens Fuquea and Lacey Fuquea.
Funeral Services were conducted on Sunday, May 8 at 3 p. m. at Calhoun First Baptist Church with Dr. John Barber, Dr. Bert Vaughn, and Al Cadenhead officiating. “One Touch” quartet had charge of the music. Burial followed in Fain Cemetery with Thomas Owens, Steven Owens, Robert Owens, Edward Owens, Chad Owens, Mitchell Owens, Randy Andrews, Matthew Worley, and Barry Roberson serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers weer the Faith Seekers Sunday School Class. The family received friends on Saturday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home.

Jean Leatherwood
Mrs. Jean Leatherwood, age 79, of Calhoun, died Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Redmond Regional Medical Center. She was born in Bartow County on June 29, 1936, daughter of the late Howard J. and Gertrude Parker Cochran, Sr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Edward Leatherwood in 1988; her son, Mike Leatherwood in 2014; and sisters, Bobbie Robinson, Shirley Faye Abernathy and Margaret Holcomb.
Mrs. Leatherwood loved every second of being a mother and grandmother. She was a member of Stoner’s Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Greg and Patty Leatherwood, Tony Leatherwood, and Andy Leatherwood; a brother and sister- inlaw, Howard and Jeanette Cochran, Jr.; a sister, Kathy Buchannon; grandchildren, Resa Parrott (Shane), Chase Leatherwood ( Nicole), Tandra Litschke ( Ian), Blake Leatherwood, and Chasity Sutherland ( Shaun) and great- grandchildren, Matthew Parrott, Grace Parrott, Evan Litschke, Ethan Litschke, Emma Litschke, Lola Mitchell, Penelope Leatherwood, Makynlei Leatherwood, and Alaneri Leatherwood.
Services to honor the life of Mrs. Jean Leatherwood will be held Wednesday, May 11 at 3 p. m. from Stoner’s Chapel Baptist Church, with Rev. Steven Moore and Rev. Shane Parrott officiating. Music will be arranged by Abigail Moore. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will include Matthew Parrott, Chase Leatherwood, Blake Leatherwood, Greg Leatherwood, Tony Leatherwood, Andy Leatherwood, Shaun Sutherland, Ian Litschke, Evan Litschke, and Ethan Litschke. Honorary pallbearers are great- granddaughters, and include Grace Parrott, Lola Mitchell, and Emma Litschke.
The Leatherwood family received friends on Tuesday, May 10 between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home.

Syble Burgess
Mrs. Syble Williams Burgess, 88 of Chatsworth, died early Saturday, May 7, 2016 at her home. She was born on May 27, 1927, daughter of the late Arvie and Maudie Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C. L. Burgess; brothers and sister- in- law, J. W. and JoAnn Williams, and Billy Williams; sisters and brothers- in- law, Ida Mae and Martin Manley, Kenneth Sosebee, and Opal Williams.
Mrs. Burgess was retired from Crown Craft. She was a member of Faith Worship Center in Chatsworth.
Survivors include a sister, Arvie Jo Sosebee of Chatsworth; grandchildren, Jesse Correll and Phoebeann Correll; nieces and nephews, Sharon Vineyard, Brenda Manley, Judy Bagley, Evelyn Wright, Kathy Williams, Beverly Williams, John Williams, Travis Manley, and Bryon Sosebee; her Goddaughter, April Edwards; and a host of other nieces and nephews.
Services to honor the life of Mrs. Sybil Williams Burgess were held Tuesday, May 10 at 2: 30 p. m. from Eton Baptist Church, with Rev. Dennis Childers and Chaplain Tommy Deal officiating. Interment followed in the Holly Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers included John Williams, Travis Manley, Jeremy Bagley, Tim Bell, and Tony Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Jamie Bagley, Chris Bell, Terry Wright, and Corey Elliott.
The family received friends on Monday, May 9 from 5 until 9 p. m. at Eton Baptist Church.

Albert Defoor
Mr. Albert “Snooks” Defoor, age 75, of Chatsworth, passed away Sunday May 8, 2016 at the St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Thomas Sidney and Beatrice Defoor, brother: Thomas Defoor, sisters: Virginia Smith, Mazie Stancill, and Madge Fleming, nephew: James Fleming, stepbrothers: John Chapman, Arthur Chapman, Horace Chapman, Ernest Chapman, stepsister: Gladys Mashburn.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years: Rita Defoor, children: Kent Defoor, Kevin and Debbie Defoor, Angela and Mark Buckner, Teresa and Jackie Gallman, and Tracy Bowers all of Chatsworth, grandchildren: Jeremy Defoor, Baili and Jackie Abernathy, Justin Defoor, Branson Defoor, Chaisen Buckner, Ansley Buckner, Lesleigh and Jake Middleton, great grandchildren: Katie Bowers, Thaddeus Bowers, Emmaleigh Middleton, Braleigh Middleton, brother and sister in law: Kenneth “Bo” and Jo Defoor, of Ooltawah, sister: Elenor “Pretty” Silvers of Calhoun, sister in law: Jane Timms of Dalton, step brother: Walter Chapman, Jr. of Chatsworth, step sister: Polly Bond of Dalton, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service for Mr. Defoor will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 4 p. m. in the chapel of Shawn Chapman Funeral Home with Sam Smith, Byron Defoor and Ken Defoor officiating. The family received friends from 3 until 9 p. m. on Tuesday. Interment will be in Fairy Valley Cemetery.

Dorothy Terrill
Mrs. Dorothy Turner Terrill, age 85, of Hall Station Road, Adairsville, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the residence.
She was born in Bartow County on July 18, 1930, daughter of the late John Henry Turner and Maggie Bramblett Turner. Mrs. Terrill was a member of the Adairsville Baptist Church and retired from Shaw Industries. She was an avid reader, enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves and playing games with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John Turner, Jr. and Harold Turner; sisters, Eva ( Virgil) Morris and Virginia Turner; nephews, Jerome Morris and Ronnie Arp.
Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years, Allen Terrill of Adairsville; daughters and sons- in- law, Charlotte ( David) Reed of Canton, Debbie (Don) Cooley of Huntsville, and Regina Wheeler of Adairsville; grandchildren, Canon Wheeler, Nash Reed, Catherine Wheeler, and Bayleh (Jonathan) Vickery; great- grandson, Jonathan “J. J.” Vickery, Jr.; brother, Eugene ( Sue) Turner; sister, Claudia Arp; sisters- in- law, Marilyn Turner, Madge ( Vinson) Tate, and Marjorie Venable; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 11 a. m. from the chapel of Barton Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Webster and Rev. Eric Sorrell officiating. Interment will follow in Eastview Cemetery, Adairsville. Pallbearers include Larry Arp, Andy Arp, Phil Arp, Rickey Arp, Jeff Turner, Michael Tate, Clint Turner, Eddie Terrill, and Chuck McStotts.

Paul Burgess, Sr.
Mr. Paul Perry Burgess Sr., age 87, of Fairmount, departed this life on Sunday May 8, 2016 at his home. Paul was born Feb. 14, 1929 in Jasper to the late Carter Burgess and Mamie McWhorter Burgess. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Marcelle Evans Burgess; daughter, Judy Caylor; great- grandchildren, Emily and Molly Caylor; brother, Glenn Burgess; brothers- in- law, Edwin Harris, Tom Weeks and James Roland. Paul was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather, His life was his faith and family and enjoyment came when all were gathered around the table for holidays and other celebrations. Paul was a member and a deacon at Ranger Baptist Church. He also was a member of Morning Star
Lodge # 349 for over 60 years. He had the honor of serving as Master of the Lodge twice and past Master of the Tri- County District. Paul was also a member and past president of Echota Vann Shrine Club and a member of Yaarab Shrine Temple.

Service to celebrate the life of Mr. Paul Perry Burgess Sr. will be held Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 3 p. m. from Ranger Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Hall officiating. Music will be provided by his daughters and grandchildren. Burial will follow at Fain Cemetery with Dan Taylor, Marc Caylor, Evan Caylor, Will Taylor, Steve McGlamery, Trey Burgess, Rhett Burgess, Ryan Burgess, Johnnie Coats, Will Crowley, Chad Grant, Wes Taylor, Braxton Coats, Braeden Coats and Benjamin Caylor. Paul’s Masonic brothers of Morning Star Lodge #349 will be in charge of graveside rites.
