Lawrence man charged in crash that killed 8-year-old girl
A Lawrence man has been arrested and charged with motor vehicle homicide after a car crash Saturday in Lawrence that killed an 8-yearold girl and sent the man and four others to the hospital with serious injuries.
Selvin Manuel Lima, 23, is accused of losing control of his 2009 Infiniti G37 and crossing into a southbound lane on Route 114, striking a 2016 Honda Civic at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the Essex District Attorney’s Office said Sunday in a release.
The 8-year-old girl was pronounced dead after being transported to Lawrence General Hospital. Four other occupants of the Civic — a 27year-old Lawrence man, a 29year-old Peabody woman and two girls from Peabody — were transported to various Boston hospitals with serious injuries. The DA’s office said there had been no other fatalities as of Sunday morning.
Lima, who is expected to be arraigned today at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he was transported with serious injuries, is charged with 10 counts related to the crash, including failing to stop for a police officer.
According to the DA’s office, Lima was stopped near the intersection of South Union Street and Winthrop Avenue by a Lawrence police officer for speeding and driving erratically. He fled at a high rate of speed when the officer approached the Infiniti on foot, and the officer did not pursue him.
He allegedly turned onto Winthrop Avenue, or Route 114 northbound, and lost control of the vehicle as he approached the intersection of Winthrop Avenue and Andover Street, colliding with the Civic.
The DA’s office did not release the identity of the victims or their relations.
