Duke, Maryland earn spots in Foxboro

Senior attack Justin Guterding scored three times to become the all-time NCAA leader in goals as Duke posted a 14-9 victory over Johns Hopkins yesterday in the NCAA Division 1 men’s lacrosse quarterfin­als in Annapolis, Md.

With the win over the Blue Jays (12-5), Duke (15-3) advanced to the national semifinals Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.

Duke’s next opponent is topranked Maryland (14-3) as the Terrapins used a six-goal run in the second half to take a 13-8 win over Cornell (13-5) in the earlier game in Annapolis.

Albany faces Yale in the other semi with the title tilt Monday . ...

Sean Black had three goals and three assists, Charlie Bertrand and Michael O’Connell of Sudbury also had hat tricks as Merrimack punched its ticket to Gillette with a 16-9 win over Seton Hill in a NCAA Div. 2 semifinal in North Andover.

In the other semifinal, Kyle Pauwels and Matt Shand each scored twice for Saint Leo (16-2) in a 12-11 win over Lenoir-Rhyne (17-3) in Hickory, N.C . . . .

Wesleyan advanced to the NCAA Div. 3 men’s lacrosse championsh­ip game as Harry Stanton had six goals for the Cardinals (18-3) during a 19-18 win over top-ranked RIT (21-1) in Rochester, N.Y. On Sunday in Foxboro, Wesleyan will face Salisbury (20-3), which beat host Gettysburg, 8-7 . . . .

Sam Henrie of Middleboro homered to help Southern New Hampshire (38-15) to an 8-1 win over St.Thomas Aquinas (38-14) in the NCAA Div.2 baseball regional . ...

Sweden lands world title

Sweden capped a victorious run through the ice hockey world championsh­ip by edging Switzerlan­d, 3-2, in the final after a penalty shootout to successful­ly defend its title in Copenhagen, Denmark. Filip Forsberg scored the decisive goal in the shootout to give Sweden a third world title in six years, and 11th overall.

Earlier, the U.S. topped Canada 4-1 to claim the bronze as Chris Kreider scored twice.

Wise wins 1st on PGA Tour

Aaron Wise cruised to his first PGA Tour victory, shattering the AT&T Byron Nelson record at 23-under on a new course in Dallas. The rookie shot a 6-under 65 to beat Marc Leishman by 3 strokes . . . .

Miguel Angel Jimenez won the Regions Tradition for his first senior major title, closing with a 2-under 70 for a 3-stroke victory in Birmingham, Ala . . . .

Ariya Jutanugarn birdied the second hole of a playoff to win the Kingsmill Championsh­ip for the second time in three years in Williamsbu­rg, Va . . . .

Rafael Nadal beat defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to win an eighth Italian Open title in Rome. Earlier, Elina Svitolina defended the women’s title with a win over top-ranked Simona Halep, 6-0, 6-4 . . . .
