Terrell, Rhody take down Hall

Jared Terrell made a running layup with 5.2 seconds left to give Rhode Island a 75-74 victory against No.20 Seton Hall last night in the second game of the men’s basketball Preseason NIT in New York.

Terrell finished with 32 points to help the Rams improve to 3-1. Stanford Robinson added 15 points.

Myles Powell led the Pirates (4-1) with 21 points. Angel Delgado had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Khadeen Carrington and Desi Rodriguez had 12 points each.

Following Terrell’s layup, Seton Hall inbounded the ball to Carrington, who raced up court but lost his dribble, and the Pirates were unable to recover the loose ball before the buzzer sounded.

Trailing by nine at halftime, Seton Hall outscored Rhode Island 27-17 in a 14:06 span to take the lead at 72-71. Carrington made two free throws with 5:54 left to give the Pirates their first lead since his jumper 5:09 into the game.

Defense was both the cause and effect for Seton Hall’s turnaround. Specifical­ly, the Pirates played defense in the second half after surrenderi­ng 60.7 percent (17-of-28) shooting from the field — including 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from 3-point range — in the first 20 minutes.

The Rams regained the lead, 73-72, on Andre Berry’s layup with 4:05 left. The lead lasted for 2:02 until Ismael Sanogo’s layup gave Seton Hall a one-point advantage.

In other New England action:

Saint Mary’s 89, Harvard 71 — In Fullerton, Calif., Jock Landale scored 26 points and the No. 21 Gaels (5-0) rolled past the Crimson (23) in the opening game of the Wooden Legacy.

Emmett Naar just missed a triple double, finishing with 11 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Gaels.

Bryce Aiken led the Crimson with 22 points, including 20 in the second half when Harvard outscored Saint Mary’s, 51-43. Chris Lewis added 18 points. It was Harvard’s biggest loss since falling by 19 points at Princeton on Feb. 5, 2016.

Harvard has done well in neutral-site tournament­s in recent years, making the title game at the 2015 Diamond Head Classic, and winning the 2013 Great Alaska Shootout and 2011 Battle 4 Atlantis.

UConn 71, Oregon 63 — Terry Larrier scored 18 points, Alterique Gilbert and Jalen Adams both added 16 points each, and the Huskies (4-0) knocked off the Ducks (4-1) in the opening round of the PK80 Invitation­al in Portland, Ore.

The Huskies overcame an awful night of shooting to knock off the Ducks playing essentiall­y a home game a couple hours north of their campus in Eugene. In other Top 25 action:

Duke 99, Portland State 81 — Trevon Duval had 22 points and the top-ranked Blue Devils (6-0) pulled away from the Vikings (4-1) in the opening game of the Phil Knight Invitation­al’s Motion Bracket in Portland, Ore.

Marvin Bagley III added 18 points, and Grayson Allen had 14 points and nine assists.

It was coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 200th victory as coach of a No. 1-ranked team. He’s 200-29 when the Blue Devils sit atop the poll.

Deontae North led the Vikings with 24 points, including 20 in the first half, but fouled out with 8:39 left in the game.

Villanova 85, Tennessee 76 — Jalen Brunson scored 25 points and the No. 5 Wildcats (5-0) overcame a 15-point deficit to beat the Volunteers (3-1) in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Villanova will play Northern Iowa today in the championsh­ip game.

North Carolina 102, Portland 78 — Luke Maye had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Joel Berry II added 18 points and the No.9 Tar Heels (40) overwhelme­d the Pilots (2-2) to open the PK80 Invitation­al’s Victory Bracket.

Xavier 83, George Washington 64 — Trevon Bluiett scored 20 points to help the No.15 Musketeers (5-0) beat the Colonials (2-3) in the Las Vegas Invitation­al.

Western Kentucky 77, Purdue 73 — Darius Thompson scored 12 points and hit two clinching free throws with 5.1 seconds left to help the Hilltopper­s (3-2) upset the No. 18 Boilermake­rs (4-2) in the consolatio­n round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

West Virginia 84, Marist 78 — Jevon Carter had 20 points, Sagaba Konate added 14, and the No. 23 Mountainee­rs (4-1) survived an upset bid by the Red Foxes (0-4) in the opening round at the Advocare Invitation­al in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Football

Mississipp­i 31, Mississipp­i State 28 — Jordan Ta’amu threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns, Jordan Wilkins ran for two scores and the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 SEC) upset the No.16 Bulldogs (8-4, 4-4) in Starkville, Miss.

Ole Miss held off a late Mississipp­i State rally to win the Egg Bowl for the fourth time in six seasons. The Rebels had a 10-6 lead at halftime and broke it open in the second half with touchdown passes of 77 yards to A.J. Brown and 63 yards to D.K. Metcalf.

Brown, the SEC’s leader in yards receiving, had six catches for 167 yards. Wilkins had 110 yards rushing.

Mississipp­i State was a two-touchdown favorite, but had to play most of the game without starting quarterbac­k Nick Fitzgerald. He was carted off the field in the first quarter with a right leg injury.
