Check out fantastic sales for fall wardrobe

- By GRETTA MONAHAN

It's easy to have our minds in two places right now — enjoying midsummer and thinking ahead to fall. And that's especially true when it comes to clothes and accessories, since this is when the fantastic sales hit and when we start thinking about what our fall wardrobes need. And if you plan it right, you can kill two birds with one stone.

One thing my wardrobe could always use once the weather turns chilly: great denim. Big brands like Diesel are offering 50 percent off on designs such as super skinny jeans, bootcut and flares. I love the Doris Joggjeans, which are skinny but cropped. In dark black, they'll look terrific in October with a big, soft, off-the-shoulder or cowl-necked sweater and lace-up boots. Right now they're less than $200 (regularly $278) at shop. diesel.com.

Early to mid-fall, I'm always reaching for a light, comfy jacket to throw on and layer over T-shirts and turtlenecks, so I'm game to get a deal on one like the Prospect Jacket from Madewell. The cool, slouchy jacket comes in a rich, universally neutral color (they call it “dark sahara”) that goes with anything I've got on, and is made with a broken twill fabric that looks instantly polished with any of my favorite scarves. You can grab one now for around $90 (usually about $120) at madewell.com.

H&M is a brand I always turn to for stylish deals year-round — even when the big sales aren't on. So when the sales do hit, the steals get even better. Right now they've got sleeveless black tank dresses going for just around $10 (normally $17.99) that look sleek and flattering with a swingy cardigan for the fall. Their knee-length pencil skirts in double-layer jersey are a no-brainer at $9.99 (usually $12.99), and I can dress them up for work meetings with a trim blazer or top them off with a cashmere hoodie sweater on weekends. Both are available at hm.com.

And speaking of blazers, they're another seasonless staple I could always use one more of. Boden (boden. com) has pretty velvet versions such as the singlebreasted Emilia Blazer in a deep burgundy wine hue that's perfect for fall outfits (they're just under $60, regularly almost $200) and in a sharp-looking imperial blue jacquard (between $60 and $70, normally $150). They'll work wonders with those pencil skirts.

And when it comes time for nights out in September, I plan on tossing on something a little funkier, such as the Amelie Broderie Biker Jacket, also at boden. com. They've feminized the classic biker look with a delicate fabric and fitted design and put them on sale for

$76 (down from $190); the cool metallic zipper details are going to be just the thing paired with those Diesel black skinny cropped jeans — perfect for cool autumn strolls.
