Cops hailed for ‘restraint’ under fire

Hub cops are being praised for showing “remarkable restraint” while pursuing a gunman, who officials say opened fire on them early yesterday morning in Mattapan.

Officers, attempting to stop a man on a scooter near the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Deering Road about 12:34 a.m., said they were fired upon by a man standing on the sidewalk, who fled the scene on foot, according to police.

After a brief foot chase, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force were able to arrest Kristopher Jordan, 30, of Boston after a brief altercation, police said. The loaded gun police believe he used to shoot at the officers was recovered nearby.

“I continue to marvel and be impressed by the splitsecond decision making, courage and selflessness displayed by my officers in their ongoing commitment to protect and serve our community,” police Commissioner William B. Evans said in a statement. “The fact that none of my officers was injured during this incident is miraculous. The fact that the suspect in this case thought it was OK to point a gun and fire at a police officer is nothing short of mind-boggling and should be disturbing to every member of our community. Thankfully, my officers got to go home to their loved ones and a dangerous felon is off the streets and no longer in a position to terrorize our neighborhoods.”

Jordan is expected to be arraigned tomorrow on charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, firing a gun within 500 feet of a dwelling, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a loaded firearm, second offense.
