Second man charged in slaying as Mattapan victim laid to rest

- By CHRIS VILLANI

A Dorchester man was ordered held without bail after being charged with the murder of a father of two who perished in a hail of gunfire more than a week ago, prosecutors said.

Kijana Walker stood behind a door inside Dorchester District Court yesterday as Assistant District Attorney Craig Iannini described the cold-blooded shooting of 19-year-old Javoni Boyd, who was cut down outside a home on Delhi Street in Mattapan.

Boyd was outside the residence when “four or five” assailants emerged from a green Acura parked nearby and approached him, Iannini said. Boyd was shot in the torso, Iannini said, and a total of 27 shell casings were recovered on the street, indicating three different guns were used.

Police traced the Acura to Walker, and cops found four guns during a search of his address on Greenlock Street in Dorchester, Iannini said, including a pair of 9mm semiautomatic weapons and a 40-caliber semiautomatic matching shell casings found at the scene. Cell tower data also placed Walker near the scene moments before the shooting took place around 7 p.m. June 13, Iannini said.

In the days following the shooting, Walker told police his car and cellphone had been stolen, but later admitted to fabricating the story, Iannini said. More than two dozen calls were made from the phone — which was password protected — during the time it was supposedly stolen, the prosecutor added.

Walker, arrested around 6 a.m. yesterday, is the second person charged with the crime. Iannini said several of the calls from Walker’s phone made minutes before the shooting were placed to Jakyres McKinney, 25, who was held without bail yesterday after being arraigned for the murder.

Defense attorney Michael Roitman unsuccessfully argued for bail to be set, pointing to the lack of an eyewitness placing Walker at the scene and his strong ties to his family and the community.

As several members of his family muttered quiet prayers in the gallery, a “not guilty” plea was entered on Walker’s behalf and he was ordered held without bail. He is due back in court July 26 for a probable cause hearing. Both Roitman and Walker’s family members declined comment after the court proceeding.

Boyd was laid to rest yesterday at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Roslindale. A memorial page said he is survived by his two children and 16 siblings, as well as “a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.”

Police say the investigation into the shooting remains open and anyone with information is urged to contact BPD detectives.
