Trump taunts Hill for rest ahead of debate

- By JULES CRITTENDEN

GOP candidate Donald Trump mocked Democrat Hillary Clinton as she took a day off yesterday — reportedly with plans to take the week off at the height of the campaign with a key debate looming.

“Hillary Clinton is taking the day off again, she needs the rest. Sleep well Hillary - see you at the debate!” Trump tweeted.

Clinton’s schedule shows a fundraiser in Orlando today, but it otherwise has surrogates, such as her daughter Chelsea, headlining her events ahead of Monday’s debate in Hempstead, N.Y. CBS News reported that a Chapel Hill, N.C., fundraiser yesterday, which Hillary Clinton was due to headline, was postponed with the campaign initially giving no reason for the postponement.

Clinton’s campaign had no immediate comment about Clinton’s latest absence from the campaign trail last night. Clinton took several days off last week after collapsing at a 9/11 commemoration event in New York, which her campaign later attributed to a previously undisclosed pneumonia diagnosis.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr., the GOP candidate’s son, caused a stir yesterday when he posted a message on Twitter likening Syrian refugees to a bowl of Skittles with three poisoned candies in it.

“If I had a bowl of skittles and I told you just three would kill you, would you take a handful?” said the tweet on the verified @DonaldTrumpJr handle. “That’s our Syrian refugee problem.”

Trump Jr.’s tweet said, “This image says it all. Let’s end the politically correct agenda that doesn’t put America first.”

His father has advocated sharply restraining immigration and has accused Clinton of advocating acceptance of tens of thousands of refugees.

Skittles’ parent company, Wrigley Americas, distanced itself from the tweet.

“Skittles are candy. Refugees are people. We don’t feel it’s an appropriate analogy,” Vice President of Corporate Affairs Denise Young said in the statement.

Trump Jr.’s tweet repeats an analogy that has been on the internet for years, using M&Ms and other foods, and targeting a variety of groups.

In other election news, Florida Republican Mike Fernandez told The Associated Press that he will spend between $2 million and $4 million to help elect Clinton.

Fernandez, who is giving the money to Florida-based Democratic groups that focus on encouraging Hispanic Americans to vote, called Trump “just beyond belief, every time he opens his mouth.” He declined to name the groups that are receiving his money, but said he’d chosen to focus on Hispanic voter turnout because Trump has “made an enemy of that group of Americans.”
