Towson leads when game suspended; finish scheduled for Monday
The Baltimore County boys lacrosse championship game between unranked Towson and No. 10 Hereford was suspended in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon in Parkton after a spectator fell from the stands.
The injured spectator was administered to and taken away in an ambulance by Baltimore County emergency personnel. The person was reportedly a Towson parent, although neither coach was available to comment.
The game is scheduled to resume on Monday at Hereford at 3:45 p.m. The Generals have a 12-10 lead with 8:47 remaining in regulation.
The only other time the county rivals played this season, the Bulls prevailed, 12-11, in overtime on April 18.
Saturday’s game featured plenty of offensive fireworks by both teams.
After Hereford junior attackman J.D. Nozemack staked the Bulls to an early 1-0 advantage by rolling the crease to beat Towson junior goalie Matt Simmons low, the Generals raced ahead, 4-1, by the end of the first quarter after sophomore attackman Leighton Bechtel and senior midfielder Jack Bell scored two goals each.
Then it was the Bulls’ turn to go on a run. They torched Towson (10-2) for five goals in succession to go back on top, 6-4, midway through the second period.
It started with junior attackman Gavin Schattall converting a feed from freshman attackman Jake Furman and continued when Nozemack fed senior midfielder Andrew Clark for a goal.
Junior midfielder Jack Drury then knotted the score when he scored off the ensuing faceoff before sophomore midfielder Grafton Griffey gave the Bulls (11-3) a 5-4 advantage.
Clark then whistled in a shot off a nice look from senior midfielder Roby Flynn to conclude the sequence.
With Towson reeling at that point, the Bulls were assessed a full-serve penalty and Towson took advantage by getting back-to-back extra-man goals by junior midfielder Dyson Adams and sophomore midfielder Rob Welling for a 6-6 halftime tie.
Hereford retook the lead on a Flynn goal until Towson rallied with five straight goals, two each by sophomore attackman Grant Kuehn and Bell and one by Adams to build an 11-7 cushion with 4:53 left in the third quarter.
Furman then sandwiched goals around one by Bell to make it 12-9 heading into the final period.
The Bulls inched closer when Nozemack one-timed a cross-crease pass from Flynn on another man-up opportunity early in the fourth quarter before play was halted.
