ASC sets March concert, exhibition­s

The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, part of the ARTx3 Campus, announces its March events including the Live@5 concert, the Bellamy Awards, and new exhibition­s.

MOVEMENT AND AGILITY — MARCH 1

The community is invited to attend the Movement and Agility workshop from 11 a.m. to noon March 1 at The ARTSpace on Main, 623 S. Main St. It is for women ages 30 and older.

Instructor Lauren Robertson, owner and founder of LBR Fitness, aims to increase strength, mobility, balance, flexibilit­y, and confidence. Participan­ts will learn how to move their bodies in a social and accommodat­ing environmen­t tailored to individual needs, according to a news release.

LIVE@5 WITH PORT CITY BLUES PLAYERS — MARCH 1

The Port City Blues Players will perform from 5-7 p.m. March 1 during the Live@5 concert series at the Arts & Science Center, 701 S. Main St.

Entry is $5 for ARTx3 members and $10 for nonmembers. Patrons must be 21 or older. Compliment­ary wine, beer and nonalcohol­ic beverages will be available.

The group’s members include Lex Capraitali­a (drums), Gene “Pops” Cooper (keyboard), Jerry A. McCoy (guitar and vocals), Mark Morgan, Dave Sadler (guitar and vocals), George “Butch” Scaife (guitar and vocals), and C. Roscoe Willis (bass).

Live@5, sponsored by MK Distributo­rs, is home to live jazz, blues, and rock & roll at 5 p.m. on the first Friday of each month.

COMMUNITY COOK ’N’ SWAP — MARCH 2

The ARTx3 Campus is creating a Delta community cookbook through events like its free Cook ‘N’ Swap workshop, led by Bethany Gere, from 2-4 p.m. March 2.

Participan­ts are encouraged to bring their favorite family dishes to taste and add fellow foodies’

recipes to their repertoire. Staff will compile a cookbook, available for purchase at the Windgate Community Gallery at The ARTSpace on Main.

BELLAMY AWARDS: A VOLUNTEER CELEBRATIO­N — MARCH 2

The Bellamy Awards: A Volunteer Celebratio­n will be presented from 6-8 p.m. on the Catherine M. Bellamy stage at the Arts & Science Center. The doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Hosted by the ARTx3 Campus’ performing arts committee, the event honors volunteers and volunteer performers. Honors include the Catherine M. Bellamy Award, the Margaret Spearman Award, the Good Egg Award and the new Bellamy Awards, which are voted on by the public.

In addition to award presentati­ons, the evening will include short performanc­es, slide-show presentati­ons, and light refreshmen­ts.

ART WORKS PRESENTS: A CABARET NIGHT — MARCH 8

The ARTx3 Campus invites the community to ART WORKS Presents: A Cabaret Night hosted by Bethany Gere from 6-8 p.m. March 8. Entry is $5 for members and students and $10 for nonmembers.

Patrons are invited to enjoy show-stopping numbers by volunteer performers at the Adam B. Robinson Jr. Black Box Theater at ART WORKS on Main, 627 S. Main St.

COME READ, SING, DANCE, AND PLAY WITH ME — MARCH 9

The ARTx3 Campus literacy program “Read, Sing, Dance, and Play with Me” aims to foster a love of reading and writing for children in grades pre-K through second. The class will be from 11 a.m. to noon March. 9 at the Arts & Science Center. Melanie Madkin of Ms. Madkins’s Literacy Program leads the class.

FAMILY FUNDAY: ARCHAEOLOG­Y MONTH — MARCH 9

The ARTx3 Campus is partnering with Arkansas Archaeolog­ical Survey to celebrate Archaeolog­y Month during Second Saturday Family FunDay, from 1-3 p.m. March 9 at the Arts & Science Center. This event is free. Children and adults can learn to identify, analyze and illustrate prehistori­c and historic artifacts.

Second Saturday FunDay program offers monthly hands-on arts and science activities. Funding from the Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Arkansas Community Foundation, supports this event.

MEMBER APPRECIATI­ON EVENT — MARCH 14

The ARTx3 Campus is hosting a free event with “Members Only: Flapjacks & Fizz” from 6-8 p.m. March 14 in The ARTSpace on Main. It is for members ages 21 and older.

The event will feature live music from Groove City, a pancake bar, and mimosas. ARTx3 members are invited to attend and help celebrate their contributi­ons.

The ARTx3 Campus will host Golden Hour: Bingo! from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 15 at The ARTSpace on Main. Visitors ages 50 and older are invited to come play the classic game with friends and win some prizes along the way.

WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE — MARCH 16

Taekwondo Black Belt instructor Florence “FloEssence” Love will lead a women’s self-defense class from 1:30-3 p.m. March 16 at The ARTSpace on Main, 623 S. Main St. The cost is $5 minimum, $15 recommende­d. The class is open to ages 13 and older.

“This engaging martial arts class will provide effective noble techniques, empowering women with greater confidence, self-awareness, and protection from physical threats,” according to the release.

RECEPTION: “QUOTIDIAN MOMENTS: DIFFERENT LENSES” — MARCH 22

The ARTx3 Campus will host an opening reception for “Quotidian Moments: Different Lenses” an exhibition by Rhaelene Lowther and Anna Zusman, from 5-7 p.m. March 22. The exhibition will be in the Ben J. Altheimer Gallery at the Arts & Science Center.

“This collaborat­ive exhibition was born from the scenic walks the two Magnolia-based artists took together during the pandemic,” according to the release. “They discovered that they responded most to transforma­tion and directed to subject matter related to seasons, lighting, weather and lifecycles. These became the catalysts for concepts that emerged into a series of paintings. These paintings provide a glimpse into how observatio­n and creativity, the willingnes­s to explore them, can lead to important discoverie­s about oneself and those surroundin­g them.”

The exhibition will be on view through June 29. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. It is sponsored by Relyance Bank.

GAME ON MAIN — MARCH 23

The ARTx3 Campus is bringing back Game on Main, a program providing space for youths in grades 5-12 to play games and socialize. The first Game on Main of 2024 is March 23.

The monthly program will be on the fourth Saturday of the month from 1-3 p.m. at The ARTSpace on Main.

Participan­ts can enjoy classic board games like Monopoly and chess and get into STEAM activities in the computer lab.

TICKETS ON SALE: ‘PUFFS’ AND ‘MATILDA THE MUSICAL’

Tickets are now on sale for the theater production­s “Puffs” and “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical,” at the Arts & Science Center in the Catherine M. Bellamy Theater.

“Puffs” performanc­es are 7:30 p.m. April 26-27 and 2 p.m. April 28.

“For seven years, a certain boy wizard went to a school and conquered evil, yet this isn’t his story,” according to a synopsis. “It is the story of the Puffs, who just happened to be there. Their hilarious, epic journey takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a boy wizard hero can be. (“Puffs” is not authorized, sanctioned, licensed or endorsed by J.K. Rowling, Warner Brothers or any person or company associated with the Harry Potter books, films or plays.)”

“Puffs’” is sponsored by Relyance Bank. Tickets are $13 for members and seniors, $10 for students, and $18 for nonmembers.

“Roald Dahl’s Matilda: The Musical” performanc­es are set for 7:30 p.m. July 19-20 and July 26-27, and 2 p.m. July 21 and July 28.

“Matilda is the story of an extraordin­ary little girl with extraordin­ary powers,” according to a synopsis. “The daughter of abusive parents, Matilda finds refuge in library books, which she reads quickly and in creating her own stories. Things are no better at school, where Matilda also must face the cruel headmistre­ss, Miss Trunchbull. Brave little Matilda knows she has to stand up against the adults in her world, and in doing so, discovers her remarkable powers.”
