Hendrix loses in shootout

Birmingham-Southern outlasted Hendrix College 57-41 on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala., scoring 22 consecutiv­e points in the second half.

Trailing 29-28 with 6:49 left in the third quarter, Kyler Jackson ran three yards for a touchdown with 3:03 left in the third quarter and Buddy Dowd caught the pass for the two-point conversion to put Birmingham-Southern up 36-28. Zack Seay ran four yards for a touchdown to make it 43-29 with 20 seconds left in the third quarter and Mike Benning caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Oakes with 5:15 left in the game to make it 50-29.

After Michael Spainhour caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Mason Doerr to get Hendrix to 50-35 with 4:53 left, Cole Marrell caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Oakes to make it 57-35 with 3:16 left. Spainhour caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Doerr with 45 seconds left to finish the scoring.

The game featured 50 first downs by both teams, with Birmingham Southern holding a 27-23 edge. Birmingham-Southern had the edge in total offense (634-569), total plays (80-69) and time of possession (35:25-24:35).

Doerr completed 31 of 50 passes for 413 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 intercepti­on for Hendrix (1-5, 0-4 Southern Athletic Associatio­n). Levi Jones rushed for 107 yards on 4 carries. Spainhour caught five passes for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tyler Urban caught 5 passes for 90 yards and 1 touchdown and Isaiah Davison caught 4 passes for 69 yards and 1 touchdown.

Oakes led Birmingham-Southern (3-2, 1-2) by completing 26 of 39 passes for 400 yards with 3 touchdowns, with two receivers going over 100 yards each in receiving. Robert Shufford rushed for 128 yards on 19 carries and 1 touchdown. Seay rushed for 92 yards and three touchdowns.
