-

SUN BELT ARKANSAS STATE 4, APPALACHIAN STATE 1

Peyton Culbertson and Tyler Mitzel combined to hold the Appalachian State offense to one run, while Arkansas State University scored its first two runs with two outs in a 4-1 victory over the Mountaineers in the series finale at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium in Boone, N.C., on Sunday.

The victory gave the Red Wolves (2221, 10-11 Sun Belt) a series victory over Appalachian State (18-26, 7-14) and its second conference road series victory this season.

Culbertson improved to 4-5 on the year after allowing 1 run on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in 6 innings. Mitzel tossed the final 3 innings to register his first career save, walking 2 and striking out 3.

Both teams struggled to get base runners early on, but the Red Wolves’ Jake Bakamus tripled to center field with one out in the fifth. However, Drew Tipton struck out for the second out before Derek Birginske hit a single to center to score Bakamus and put the Red Wolves on top 1-0. Birginske advanced to second base on a wild pitch before a single by Grant Hawkins plated him for the second run of the frame.
