Swamps, critters, vittles ... yee-haw!

SOUTHERN EXPOSURE Reality TV has discovered the good ol’ boys of the South. Here are a few that y’all might know.

American Stuffers (Animal Planet). Daniel Ross’ backyard Xtreme Taxidermy shop in Romance (White County) is featured. The hook: He’ll freeze-dry your dead pet so it still looks alive.

Assistants include Fred, described by Animal Planet as “a shoeless, shirtless, classic redneck with an accent so strong, he’s often in need of an interprete­r.”

Swamp People (History). Set in Louisiana’s Atchafalay­a swamp, the series follows locals during the 30-day alligator hunting season. The series frequently uses subtitles so viewers can understand the thick Cajun accents.

Swamp Men (Nat Geo Wild). The staff of Billie Swamp Safari, located in the Florida Everglades’ Big Cypress Swamp, strive to ensure the safety of visitors to the area. Lots of ’gators and snakes.

Swamp Brothers (Discovery). Stephen and Robbie Keszey run Florida’s largest reptile sanctuary and exotic reptile dealership.

Swamp Loggers (Discovery). Familyowne­d operation dodges snakes to log the swamps of North Carolina.

Gator Boys (Animal Planet). Two trappers capture nuisance alligators threatenin­g Everglades residents.

American Hoggers (A&E). The Campbell family of central Texas wages war against feral hogs.

Rattlesnak­e Republic (Animal Planet). Four teams of rattlesnak­e wranglers hunt the slithery critters in the heart of Texas.

Snake Man of Appalachia (Animal Planet). Verlin Short of Kentucky keeps more than 40 rattlesnak­es and copperhead­s for use in religious services.

Mudcats (History). Oklahoma good ol’ boys with beer guts compete to catch catfish by hand.

Hillbilly Handfishin’ (Animal Planet). Skipper and Trent charge Yankees good money to wade in snake-infested Oklahoma creeks and stick their arms in catfish holes.

Moonshiner­s (Discovery). Follows folks brewing their own in the backwoods of Virginia.

Duck Dynasty (A&E). The Robertson family of West Monroe, La., has built a multimilli­on-dollar empire around a line of duck calls and decoys.

Cajun Pawn Stars (History). Follows Jimmie “Big Daddy” Deramus and a cast of “quirky characters” at his pawnshop in Alexandria, La.

Billy the Exterminat­or (A&E). Billy Bretherton’s pest-control business in Benton, La., (near Shreveport) is featured.

Call of the Wildman (Animal Planet). Ernie “Turtleman” Brown Jr. and his dog Lolly track down nuisance critters in Kentucky — including catching “monster” snapping turtles with his bare hands.

Hairy Bikers (History). Texans Paul Patranella and Bill Allen are both hairy and biker buffs. But they’re also food lovers who travel around sampling local cuisine.
