Paraclete softball shuts out Mary Star of the Sea

SAN PEDRO — The Paraclete softball team defeated Mary Star of the Sea 10-0 in six innings on Thursday to remain tied for first place in the Del Rey League.

Paraclete coach Margaret Neill said she was proud of how well her team hit the ball as they had 15 hits. The Spirits did slow down in the middle innings, leaving the bases loaded twice without scoring, but they picked it back up in the later innings.

Addison Vandecar picked up three hits and stole four bases for the Spirits, while Jamie Sencion also recorded three hits with two RBIs, Shaylee Scripter added two hits and two RBIs and Addi Gorman had two hits, including a triple.

Sencion threw a no-hitter, walking four and hitting one with nine strikeouts in six innings.

Paraclete finishes the league season on Tuesday when they host Mary Star of the Sea in a doublehead­er.

Boys Tennis Knight 15, AV High 3 Lancaster 12, Knight 6

The Knight boys tennis team defeated a shorthande­d Antelope Valley 15-3 on Tuesday and lost to Lancaster 12-6 on Monday in Golden League matches.

The Antelopes fielded just two singles players and two doubles teams, automatica­lly handing the Hawks six points.

The Hawks swept all six of their doubles sets after each team earned a forfeit win as No. 1 Wayne Jarvis and Angel Aguilar won 6-1 and 6-2, No. 2 David Garcia and Daniel Fragoza won 6-4 and 6-2, and the No. 3 team of Joseph Adame and Kingsley Gutierrez won 6-2 and 6-1.

Knight No. 1 singles player Ethan Chavez added two wins to his forfeit victory, 6-2 and 6-1, while Aldonn Duero had on 6-1 win and Kevin Fuentes had a foreit win.

Antelope Valley’s No. 1 singles player,

Denver, won two tiebreak sets, 7-6 (3) and 7-6 (4), and No. 2 Victor earned a 6-4 win.

Knight and Lancaster won the exact same set matchups as the first time the two teams played.

Chavez won two sets, 6-1 and 6-4. He had two fight back from a 4-1 deficit to win the 6-4 set.

“Ethan Chavez was down 1-4 and I gave him a few strategy ideas,” Knight coach James Jutila said. “He won the next five games straight against their No. 3 singles player for a 6-4 win.”

Duero also won two sets, 6-1 and 7-5, while Fragoza won a 6-2 set.

The Hawks won just one doubles set, a 6-2 victory by Jarvis and Aguilar.

Lancaster won eight of nine doubles sets. The No. 1 duo of Dylan Kwak and Shaun Ikeuchi picked up a 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 sweep, while No. 2 Cooper Larson and Lucas Hidalgo also swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

The Eagles’ No. 3 team of Brian and Damien won two 6-3 sets.

Isaiah Liggins picked up three 6-1 wins at No. 1 singles for the Eagles and Finley won a 6-1 set at No. 3 singles.

Swimming Boys: QHHS 130, Highland 38 Girls: QHHS 136, Highland 34

The Quartz Hill boys and girls swim teams defeated Highland in a Golden League meet on Wednesday at Marie Kerr Park.

The boys won 130-38 to win an undefeated league title, 7-0, and finish the season undefeated at 9-0.

The girls won 136-34 to also win an undefeated league title, 7-0, and finish the season with an 8-0-1 record.

The Royals won every event in each meet. For the boys, Conner Alvarez won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 12.40 seconds and the 100 breaststro­ke (1:02.26). He was also a part of the winning 200 free relay team (1:38.50) with AJ Petho, Chase Stanford and Kristian Loza, as well as the winning 200 medley relay (1:48.21) with Xander Martin, Ian Venegas Fiedler and Nathaniel Terrell.

Loza won the 200 freestyle (1:59.24), while Petho won the 50 free (23.94), Venegas Fiedler won the 100 butterfly (57.65), Stanford won the 100 free (55.14), Evan Leo won the 500 free (5:45.66), Martin won the 100 backstroke (1:02.13) and Petho, Venegas Fiedler, Stanford and Loza won the 400 free relay (3:37.78).

Highland had several second-place finishes.

Avery Thompson finished second in the 200 free (1:59.41) and the 100 breast (1:07.15). He was also on the second-place 400 free relay team with Kenny Scott, Robert Escarate and Christophe­r Macias.

Scott finished in the second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.10).

On the girls side, Quartz Hill’s Bethany Burga won the 200 free (2:05.40) and the 500 free (5:21.22). She was also a part of the winning 200 free relay (1:47.69) with Bailey Nickols, Isabelle Drossel and Magnolia Ahking. Burga also teamed up with Anya Juliano, Ahking and Drossel on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:59.57).

Nickols won the 100 free (57.72) and the 100 back (1:09.53) and also teamed up with Madison Bumgardner, Victoria Alamillo and Juliano for a win in the 400 free relay (4:20.14).

Juliano won the 200 IM (2:40.85) and the 100 breaststro­ke (1:16.62), while Ahking won the 100 back (1:09.53).

Highland’s Chloe Flores-Martinez finished third in the 500 free (6:55.27), while Joan Cantila took third in the 100 back (1:19.24).

Highland also finished second in the 400 free relay (4:37.98) with a team made up of Judith Cantila, Flores-Martinez, Aubree Nelson and Joan Cantila.

The Golden League Finals will take place on Wednesday at Eastside Pool.
