Top 25 Men No. 4 Houston 76, Texas 72

AUSTIN, Texas — J’Wan Roberts made a tiebreaking layup with 39 seconds left in overtime and Emanuel Sharp’s four free throws over the final 10 seconds sent No. 4 Houston to a win over Texas.

Jamal Shead led all scorers with 25 points for Houston (19-2, 6-2 Big 12). Shead came up with big shots time after time in a defensive slugfest when the Cougars struggled to find any offensive rhythm.

Shead’s consecutive 3-pointers in the second half came in a 9-0 run that helped Houston regain the lead after Texas had rallied from 11 points down. The Big 12’s best defensive team held the Longhorns to a single basket in overtime.

Max Abmas scored 20 for Texas (147, 3-5), but missed a wild layup with a chance to tie before the rebound fell to Sharp, setting up two free throws for a four-point Cougars lead.

Abmas was then fouled on a 3-pointer. He made two free throws and missed the third, but Sharp again snagged the rebound and made two more free throws to seal the win.

No. 7 Duke 77, Virginia Tech 67

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Jeremy Roach scored 16 points off the bench to lead No. 7 Duke to a victory over Virginia Tech.

Bothered by knee and ankle injuries of late, Roach shot 5 of 11 from the floor and made four 3-pointers for the Blue Devils (16-4, 7-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have won three straight games and 11 of 12.

“I thought our team just had great togetherness,” coach Jon Scheyer said. “We hit some timely 3s and some guys stepped up in key moments. … Proud of this win. You get a chance to play two games in three days (Duke played Clemson on Saturday), and to win both of them is really good. Looking forward to building it from here.”

MJ Collins paced the Hokies (13-8, 5-5) with 17 points. Virginia Tech had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Duke grabbed the lead with a 12-0 run in the first half and never relinquished it. The Hokies cut a 35-29 halftime deficit to three on three occasions in the second half, with the final time coming on Hunter Cattoor’s 3-pointer with 14:07 remaining.

The Blue Devils, though, gradually pulled away behind 59.3% shooting in the final 20 minutes (16 of 27). Kyle Filipowski added 14 points for Duke, and Tyrese Proctor finished with 12.

Cattoor had 15 points for the Hokies. Sean Pedulla and Lynn Kidd scored 12 apiece.

Top 25 Women Mississippi St. 77, No. 9 LSU 73

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Reserves Darrione Rogers scored 19 points and Mjracle Sheppard added 12 as Mississippi State used a strong defensive effort in the third quarter to beat No. 9 LSU.

The loss was the second straight for LSU, which fell to top-ranked South Carolina 76-70 on Thursday. It was the third loss in five games for the Tigers (18-4, 5-3 SEC).

“This game was one that was not surprising. When you play a game on the road after a big game like we had with South Carolina, you watch your team and see how they reacted,” LSU coach Kim Mulkey said. “We had the lead and did some things early, but in the second half we can’t seem to get stops defensively when they matter. You have to get stops at this level and we don’t seem to be doing it.”

Jerkaila Jordan scored 15 of her 24 points in the second half for Mississippi State (17-5, 4-3).

Sheppard, who held LSU AllAmerican guard Hailey Van Lith to four points, added six steals, five assists and four rebounds. Rogers shot 6 for 10 from the field, including four 3-pointers, and hit three key free throws in the final 30 seconds.

“Those are those moments that you dream about as a kid — big situations against top teams,” Rogers said. “My teammates and coaching staff truly believe in me and they get mad when I don’t shoot the ball. I live for those moments.”

Angel Reese had 20 points and 18 rebounds for LSU. Flau’jae Johnson finished with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, Aneesha Morrow scored 14 points and Mikayla Williams 11.
