‘New chapter’
Lawrence finding new fans as opening act for Jon Bellion
Clyde and Gracie Lawrence grew up in a musical family.
It’s to no surprise that the siblings have made a career out of it as the masterminds behind the band Lawrence.
The band is opening for Jon Bellion’s “The Glory Sound Prep” tour.
“We’re just getting into gear,” Clyde Lawrence says. “The album has been well received since last year. This new chapter is just starting, and we have a new song.”
That single, “Casualty,” was produced by Bellion and was released on June 21.
“We worked on the song with Jon, and he’s been one of our favorite artists,” Gracie Lawrence says. “We knew from the second he showed up to our first session in sweatpants that we were about to make some great music. I think with ‘Casualty,’ we’ve found a sound that still feels like Lawrence while injecting some of Jon’s authentic style that we’ve always been so inspired by.”
When listening to Lawrence, one could easily hear numerous influences.
Gracie Lawrence says the pair grew up listening to Motown and a lot of classic rock, though the band crosses a number of genres with its music.
“We listened to music growing up, and we would jam together all the time,” she says. “It started as something that we just did at home. … Then it grew to performing in front of our peers. Then it was in front an audience and now we’re touring the world.”
Lawrence is touring in support of its 2018 album, “Living Room,” which is where the writing process took place for the songs.
Over the course of a few years, the band’s profile has steadily risen, and snagging the opening spot on Bellion’s summer tour has pushed it faster.
Clyde Lawrence says the trajectory is completely subjective.
“It’s felt very gradual,” he says. “Some people say were in the middle ground. Others think we should be bigger. We’re just enjoying the ride while we spend our lives making the music we want to. The fan base continues to grow, which is always amazing and humbling.”
Although the siblings are pursuing music full time, each one has an accomplished solo career.
Clyde Lawrence has composed songs and scores for films such as “Miss Congeniality,” “Music and Lyrics” and the coming Disney film “Noelle.”
Meanwhile, Gracie Lawrence stars in the CBS series “One Dollar” and has been in the films “The Sitter,” “Adam” and “Did You Hear About the Morgans?”
“What’s interesting about having two songwriters is that you have to pass a lot more tests for the song to get a go,” Gracie Lawrence says. “I might think the verse is good and Clyde won’t. We value everyone’s opinion, so that everyone is creating together.”
Clyde Lawrence says, “I think what we do is challenge each other. We’re perfectionists, and when something isn’t right, instead of moving on, we’ll sit there and figure out how to make it work.”
