Salas hits milestone, Aggies clinch top WAC seed

EDINBURG, Texas — Just hours after the New Mexico State men clinched a share of the Western Athletic Conference title and the top seed for the upcoming league tournament, the Aggie women did the same on Saturday.

Brooke Salas scored 20 points, moving into second place on the school’s career list, and the Aggies held off host UT Rio Grande Valley 70-67.

Salas finished Saturday with 1,806 career points. Anita Maxwell (2,601) is the Aggie all-time leader.

Gia Pack scored 17 and Monique Mills 12 for NMSU (20-6, 12-1), which won its 11th straight game.

Madison Northcutt had 21 points and 15 rebounds for UTRGV (14-12, 8-5).

NO. 1 BAYLOR 73, NO. 20 IOWA

STATE 60: In Ames, Iowa, Chloe Jackson scored 18 points, Juicy Landrum had 16 and top-ranked Baylor never trailed in clinching the outright Big 12 title.

Kalani Brown added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bears (251, 15-0 Big 12). Bridget Carleton had 28 points and eight rebounds for Iowa State (20-7, 10-5).

NO. 15 GONZAGA 64, SAN FRANCISCO 44: In San Francisco, Chandler Smith scored 14 points, Zykera Rice added 12 and Gonzaga (25-3, 14-2) handed San Francisco its seventh straight loss. Shannon Powell had 20 points for the Dons (6-21, 2-14).

NO. 19 TEXAS 81, TEXAS TECH 57: In Austin, Texas, Joyner Holmes scored 16 of her 20 points in a dominant first half for Texas. Clovis native Danni Williams added 16 points for the Longhorns (21-6, 11-4 Big 12). Chrislyn Carr led the Red Raiders (12-14, 3-12) with 19 points.

NO. 25 RICE 59, NORTH TEXAS 47: In Denton, Texas, 6-foot-9 Nancy Mulkey scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half and Rice (23-3, 14-0) celebrated its first Top 25 ranking by clinching the Conference USA title and winning its 16th straight game. Terriell Bradley led North Texas (14-12, 7-7) with 10 points.

TARLETON STATE 80, ENMU 75: In Stephenvil­le, Texas, Eastern New Mexico (18-8, 13-5 Lone Star) rallied from a 19-point fourth-quarter deficit to within one possession before falling to the TexAnns (19-7, 12-6). ENMU senior Treyanna Clay scored 25 points, including 17-of-20 on free throws.

WNMU 62, TAMU-KINGSVILLE 59: In Kingsville, Texas, Ciara Fields’ 15 points led four double-figure scorers for Western New Mexico (10-15, 6-12 Lone Star), which built a 15-point lead and held on to beat Kingsville (9-16, 6-12).

NMHU 79, CHADRON STATE 62: In Las Vegas, N.M., Jordyn Lewis had 24 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals on Senior Night as the Cowgirls (4-23, 3-18 RMAC), who were down to six players because of injuries, defeated the Eagles (4-23, 3-18).
