APD: Two killed in Northeast Heights crash
Police plan investigation and reconstruction of the crash
Two women were killed Thursday morning when, police say, a car heading southbound on Wyoming crashed into the passenger side of their car as it turned left just north of Academy NE near a busy shopping center parking lot.
Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department, said just before 10 a.m. officers were called to the scene where they found the two cars had crashed.
“One car was traveling southbound and it hit another car that was turning from northbound Wyoming onto Cubero when the accident took place,” Gallegos said.
He said two older women, who were in the front and rear passenger side seats of a Mercedes-Benz, were killed. The driver of that car was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is in stable condition.
Gallegos said the driver of the other car, a Buick, also suffered minor injuries and decided to go to the hospital to get checked out.
The Mercedes could be seen where it came to a stop several feet from the road on a patch of grass at the corner of Wyoming and Cubero NE. The Buick was on the
curb. Both cars had significant damage and several people from the nearby shopping center or who had been driving by came over to see what had happened.
“Speed does not appear to be a factor initially but they’re going to be doing an investigation and a reconstruction so we should have more details soon,” Gallegos said.
He said investigators are notifying the women’s next of kin.
