Police issued an arrest warrant for a man named “Rico” after he shot a woman in southeast Albuquerque Thursday afternoon, according to a police department spokesman.

APD officer Simon Drobik said the woman was shot in the leg and is expected to survive.

He said officers responded to a “shots fired” call around 2 p.m. near California and Cochiti SE, where they learned a man named “Rico” shot a woman during a fight.

Witnesses told police Rico shot another woman but Drobik said she was not found and police were checking hospitals.

Drobik said police believe Rico fled to a nearby trailer park, where officers shut down the area during an hourslong search Thursday.

Officers couldn’t find him, however, but did identify him and issued a arrest warrant by nightfall.

Drobik couldn’t provide Rico’s last name.

Police vehicles and crime scene tape blocked off both sides of Cochiti, at California and Florida, while officers clutched rifles at the entrance to the trailer park.

Crime scene tape also cordoned off the sidewalk in front of a home at California and Cochiti SE where a blood trail led to a pile of woman’s clothing and medical gloves.

Mike Brogdon said he stepped out of his office, at Cochiti and California SE, after hearing three gunshots.

“You never get used to it,” he said.

Brogdon has owned a construction business in the area since 1984 and is no stranger to the sound of gunfire.

He said crime has always held a strong presence in the area, with thieves often cutting the fence to his property and making off with items.

Brogdon said he often walks down the adjacent alleyways and picks up syringes, throwing them into plastic bottles.

“Over the years, it just kind of cycles,” he said. “They get real bad, then it cleans up. Gets better for awhile. Right now it’s real bad.”
