Ryan McGarvey to play New Year’s Eve show in Albuquerque

- JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR BY ADRIAN GOMEZ

Ryan McGarvey is a busy man.

He tours around the world. He is constantly writing music.

Despite remaining super-busy, McGarvey always enjoys coming back home to New Mexico to perform.

In what has become a tradition of sorts, the blues-rock guitarist will perform a New Year’s Eve show at the Launchpad.

“We always love trying to keep New Year’s Eve as a special show to have at home, to be shared with friends, family, and loved ones,” he says. “We always like to try to make it a bit different, as well as a party more than just our standard concerts that we perform regularly these days.”

McGarvey has also had a spectacular 2017.

Looking back on the past 12 months, McGarvey simply says the year was “unpredictable.”

“I have spent most of the year writing, as well as working on a few projects that spilled over from last year,” he says. “Primarily, I have been working with an amazing team in Hollywood on mixing and putting together a brand-new live album that we recorded in the summer of last year in Hollywood. That release will be happening very soon. Then I’m looking to get back into the studio right away to record a few more albums that we have just been itching to get out over the last few years or so.”

Having so much material is normal for McGarvey, because he is constantly writing.

“I usually just take it as it comes, if there’s something inspiring me to actually sit down and write,” he says of his process. “Or if lyrics just pop in my head. Or if I just play something that I think sounds interesting on the guitar, I will usually try to see it through and see if there’s anything really there to cultivate.”

Although he’s been performing professionally for over a decade, McGarvey embraces changes and chances to learn.

He also enjoys his life on the road. “You’re always kind of learning new things,” he says. “I think I possibly took it a bit too serious in my earlier days. I find that I like it more now when things just come naturally — not necessarily looking for the most profound way I can phrase something, but more just speaking from the heart.”
