A LOOK BACK AT THE TOP SPORTS STORIES IN NORTHERN NEW MEXICO

-

FAREWELL

PASSING: Pecos High School four-sport athlete Brandon Quintana, who was studying education at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, died unexpectedly Monday. He was 20. A 2013 Pecos grad, Quintana ran cross-country and track, and also played basketball and baseball. He also played a season of basketball at Lamar Community College in Colorado, said Pecos athletic director Fred Trujillo. “He was very respectful and very intense when it came to athletics,” Trujillo said. “And he was a very good student.”

FOOTBALL

NOT AGAIN!: Dreams of an undefeated season disappeared under the chilly, murky clouds in Portales as Robertson fell 43-14 to the hometown Rams in Saturday’s Class 4A state championship game. It’s the second straight season the Cardinals (12-1) have lost in the season finale.

CROSS-COUNTRY

REGIONAL FINISH: Santa Fe Indian School’s Michael Tenorio, who was the Class 4A state cross-country champion, finished 32nd overall in Saturday’s 2016 Footlocker Cross Country West Regional Championship at Mt. Sac College in Walnut, Calif. Tenorio’s time of 16:19 was second-best among New Mexico participants.

SOCCER

FULL-ON COACH: The interim has been removed from the Gerzain Chavez’s title as he assumes full girls soccer head coaching duties for St. Michael’s High School. Chavez, an assistant for the Lady Horsemen, took over the job shortly before the season started when Robyn Serge accepted a college coaching assignment. St. Mike’s reached the state semifinals in November.

UPCOMING THINGS TO SEE OR DO

HOOPS: The Bobby Rodriguez Capital City Classic at Santa Fe High School tipped off Thursday and will continue through Saturday with a number of local teams. In the boys bracket, Capital, St. Michael’s, Desert Academy, Santa Fe Indian School and the Demons play, with semifinals scheduled for today at 3:30 and 7 p.m., and the championship game 7 p.m. Saturday. The girls side includes St. Michael’s, Capital, SFIS and Demonettes, with semifinals today at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and the championship 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
