Viola Rufina Luna Easley, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 15, 2016, in Fort Worth, TX. Viola was born in Velarde, New Mexico on September 9, 1922, the daughter of Jose Rafael Luna and Rafaelita Garcia Luna, both educators. Viola, the eldest child, was raised with her siblings on their parent’s fruit orchard and subsistence farm, Luna Orchards, in Velarde where many of her favorite memories, her love of mountains, desert rains and thunderstorms, and her loving, giving and patient character were formed.

After attending McCurdy Mission School through high school, Viola went to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque where she excelled both scholastically and socially while earning a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. After one year teaching Home Economics at Los Lunas HS and two years as a Library Assistant at UNM Zimmerman Library, she married Ellis H. Easley of Dawson, NM, whom she met while they both attended UNM. They lived in Schenectady, NY where Ellis was an electrical engineer with International General Electric Co. They transferred to Caracas, Venezuela for 4 years and then returned to the States for two years, living in New Mexico and New York City. They then returned to South America and spent 10 years in Colombia living in Barranquilla, Bogota and Cali.

After returning to the US in 1962, Ellis worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Albuquerque and Viola returned to work at Zimmerman Library. When the Corps moved their offices to Fort Worth, TX in 1970, Viola went to work at the FW Public Library. Ellis passed away in 1985 and Viola continued working until 1993. After retiring she took trips to several parts of Europe and to Canada and Alaska. She frequently traveled to New Mexico and Colorado, which she enjoyed the most – she had to see her beloved mountains. She also loved spending time with her family and reading. She loved to wonder, to question and to explore. Reference Librarianship was second nature to her. Always ready to study a question and check the references, she hungered for the facts and encouraged and inspired others to do the same.

Viola is survived by her daughter, Ava Goodheart, of Boulder, CO, her sons, Karl Easley, Ellis Easley and Robert Easley, all of Fort Worth, TX, her daughter Laurel Oyarce and husband Guillermo, of Denton, TX, her granddaughter Sara Cohen and husband Yaniv, of Burlingame, CA, her grandson Manuel Oyarce, of Denton, TX, her great grandchildren, Eliseo, Ethan, Ezra and Lola, and her siblings, Emma Writtenberry, Ralph Luna and Olinda Chavez, of Albuquerque, NM, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her infant brother Armando, her sister Sara Sanchez, sister-in-law Marie Luna, brothers-in-law Mason Writtenberry and Robert Chavez, and daughter-in-law Lisa Goodheart.

Cremation in Fort Worth will be followed by interment of the Urn in Albuquerque at Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery; arrangements by Strong Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Avenue SE, Albuquerque.
