U.S.’S Fritz earns match with Djokovic in Rome
ROME — American Taylor Fritz beat Daniel Evans 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Italian Open to set up a meeting with Novak Djokovic.
Jannik Sinner beat Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-4 to set up a match with Rafael Nadal.
Kei Nishikori, Coco Gauff and Petra Kvitova also advanced.
More tennis: There are no American men in the ATP’S Top 30 for the first time in the nearly half-century of computerized tennis rankings, which began Aug. 23, 1973. The highest-ranked man from the U.S., Taylor Fritz, slid one place to No. 31. Next is John Isner, who rose five spots to No. 34. Novak Djokovic remained at No. 1, extending his record for most weeks leading the ATP to 320. There’s a new No. 2, however: Daniil Medvedev overtook that slot from Rafael Nadal. In the WTA, Aryna Sabalenka jumped to a careerhigh No. 4 from No. 7. Ash Barty held onto No. 1 followed by Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep.
