Jayhawks capture Big 12 opener again

Ochai Agbaji made the go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left and finished with 23 points as No. 5 Kansas beat No. 14 Texas Tech 58-57 on Thursday night, giving the Jayhawks a win in their conference opener for the 30th season in a row.

Agbaji made four 3pointers but got the gamewinnin­g points for the Jayhawks (7-1, 1-0 Big 12.

Texas Tech’s Terrence Shannon Jr., who had 20 points and nine rebounds, had his mid-range jumper blocked by Jalen Wilson to end the game.

Creighton 94, St. John’s 76: Marcus Zegarowski scored 20 points, shooting 6-for-7 from 3-point range, for No. 9 Creighton (5-2, 1-1 Big East).

Women

UNC 92, Syracuse 68: Janelle Bailey scored 25 points and North Carolina ran away from No. 18 Syracuse (4-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). Petra Holesinska added 21 points for the Tar Heels (6-2, 1-2), who lost their first two league games.

Uconn 80, Creighton 47: Olivia Nelson-ododa hit all nine of her shots from the floor and scored 24 points to lead No. 3 Uconn to a rout of Creighton.

N.C. State 79, Wake Forest

65: Jakia Brown-turner scored 14 of her 23 points to lead the No. 4 Wolfpack to the win.

South Carolina 103, Temple 41: Zia Cooke tied her career high with five 3-pointers and scored 23 points as No. 5 South Carolina powered past Temple.

Tennessee 66, Indiana 58: Rennia Davis scored 19 points and Tennessee handed No. 15 Indiana its second straight loss.

Northweste­rn 70, Purdue 54: Veronica Burton scored a career-high 27 points for No. 16 Northweste­rn.
