Vela breaks MLS goal record

Red Bulls shut out, NYCFC wins 2- 1

Carlos Vela had a hat trick to break the MLS season goals record with 34 and help Los Angeles FC beat the Colorado Rapids 3- 1 on Sunday in the regular- season finale.

Vela broke the mark of 31 set last year by Atlanta United’s Josef Martinez.

Los Angeles ( 21- 4- 9) set an MLS record for season points with 75, breaking the mark of 71 set last year by the New York Red Bulls. Los Angeles earned the top seed in the Western Conference and a first- round bye to the playoffs.

Colorado ( 12- 16- 6) entered the match within three points of the playoff line after a 3- 0 victory over Dallas last week.

Vela scored in the 28th and 31st minutes, Kei Kamara countered for Colorado in the 40th and Vela connected again in the 51st. Impact 3, Red Bulls 0: Orji Okwonkwo had a goal and an assist to help Montreal beat New York. Bojan and Maximilian­o Urruti also scored for the Impact and goalkeeper Clement Diop made one save for the shutout. With their first loss in three weeks, the playoff- bound Red Bulls dropped to sixth in the Eastern Conference. New York will play Philadelph­ia in the first round of the playoffs. New York City FC 2, Union 1: Ronald Matarrita and Ismael Tajouri- Shradi scored and New York City FC beat Philadelph­ia. New York City ( 18- 6- 10), the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, earned a first- round bye and will play No. 4 seed Toronto or fifth- seeded D. C. United in the conference semifinals. The Union will host the sixth- seeded Red Bulls in the knockout round. Timbers 3, Earthquake­s 1: Dairon Asprilla celebrated with a flip after his goal pulled Portland in front and the Timbers went on beat San Jose for a playoff spot. FC Dallas 6, Sporting Kansas City 0: Zdenek Ondrasek scored twice and FC Dallas routed Sporting Kansas City to earn a playoff spot.

Sounders 1, Minnesota United 0: Roman Torres scored in the 29th minute and Seattle beat Minnesota to finish second in the Western Conference. Atlanta United 3, Revolution 1: Josef Martinez and Julian Gressel scored second- half goals and Atlanta United beat New England.

Dynamo 4, Galaxy 2: Christian Ramirez scored two goals in Houston’s victory.

Toronto FC 1, Crew 0: Alejandro Pozuelo scored on a free kick in the 57th minute and Toronto FC beat Columbus.

FC Cincinnati 0, D. C. United 0: Przemyslaw Tyton had his third shutout.

Real Salt Lake 1, Whitecaps 0: Damir Kreilach scored in the 28th minute and Nick Rimando made five saves for his 10th shutout.

Fire 5, Orlando City 2: Przemyslaw Frankowski scored twice, and Aleksandar Katai had a goal and an assist for Chicago. C. J. Sapong also scored for Chicago.
