VOLUNTEER CORNER

- With Helena Badger

■ Do you want to improve the lives of older people? Do you want to make new friendships? Do you want to make a difference?

If the answer is yes, then volunteering at Abbeyfield Care home could be for you!

Abbeyfield Care Home in Winnersh is a specialist Dementia Care home opened in 2016. They currently have 39 residents, with a capacity for 60. They are looking for befrienders to spend time with residents on a one-to-one basis, chatting with them and sharing interests.

Volunteers are very much part of team and are welcome to come to events and have input in making Abbeyfield an even happier place for residents.

■ The Lend and Play Toy Library based in Woodley is a registered charity which provides low cost loans of toys, games and play equipment to families, childminders, carers and children’s groups across the area.

Parents become members first (for a £10 annual fee) and then they can hire a number of toys for a three-week period.

The toy library also runs a party hire service offering larger play equipment suitable for birthday parties, weddings and events.

A new Saturday toy library volunteer is required to help check, clean and process the party-hire toys and to use the database to book toys in and out on a minimum of two Saturdays per month from 10amnoon.

They are also looking for new committee members to join their committee.

■ Sport in Mind is a small Berkshire charity that provides sport and physical activity sessions for local adults (18+) experiencing mental health conditions (anxiety, depression, etc) in order to improve their health and wellbeing.

They are looking for a volunteer to help with a Badminton group and a table tennis group that meets in Woodley every Friday from noon-1pm.

Volunteers will need to have some experience of the sports, but do not need to be experts! Patience and good communication skills are essential.
