Speed bumps installation goes ahead at schools
North Lanarkshire Council are pressing ahead with plans to install speed bumps outside two Newmains primary schools later this year.
The local authority have given notice of their intention to install the traffic-calming measures on School Road, near Newmains Primary School.
The proposed installation will see four sets of speed cushions installed on the road after funding of £10,000 has been approved by the Wishaw Local Area Partnership to install traffic calming in the street.
Five sets of speed cushions are also set to be installed in nearby Newton Drive, near St Brigid’s Primary School.
Last year the Wishaw Press reported that the council’s roads department produced a proposal for the work and discussed their plans with residents.
At that time one Newmains community councillor said: ”They don’t stop anything.
“You go there and see it has no impact on slowing down buses, 4x4s or motor bikes. “They will go in between the bumps.” It was confirmed last week a new joint campus for Newmains and St Brigid’s Primary schools was given the go ahead following the council’s budget for 2017/18.
The confirmation of the new multi-million pound campus, set to be built on land near to the current St Brigid’s Primary School, comes after years of campaigning for better schools in the area.
Any person wishing to object to the traffic calming proposals must do so in writing to the Head of Business for Legal and Democratic Solutions, North Lanarkshire Council, Civic Centre, Windmillhill Street, Motherwell, ML1 1AB no later than Wednesday, March 29, and must contain the name and address of the objector, the matter to which they relate and the grounds on which they are made.
