Tributes have been paid to Wishaw council hopeful Marjory Borthwick who died last week.

The Conservative candidate was up for election in May but tragically died at a dinner held to mark the start of the party’s Scottish conference last Thursday.

Frantic attempts were made to save the 61- year- old before paramedics arrived at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow.

Marjory, of Netherton, was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Friday’s Scottish Conservative conference opened with a minute of silence for the Tory stalwart.

Central Scotland MSP Graham Simpson led the tributes, saying: “Marjory will be sadly missed by us all. “She was everybody’s friend. “The manner of her death was such a shock.

“She has been at the heart of the party in North Lanarkshire for as long as I can remember.

“I was working very closely with her in her quest to be elected as a councillor for Wishaw.

“I had every confidence that she would have achieved this.

“Outside of politics, Marjory was a volunteer for Motherwell and Wishaw Citizens Advice Bureau.

“We are determined to get the result in May that she would have wanted.”

Independent Alliance councillor Sam Love added: “She was a good friend and one of the nicest people you could ever meet in your life.

“She was an active and devout member of the church. “She stood for a few council elections.” SNP councillor Rosa Zambonini added: “Very sad to hear of the death of my neighbour and Conservative party council candidate Marjory Borthwick. Thoughts with her friends and family.”

Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows said: “Such sad news about Marjory Borthwick.

“She will be missed. Condolences to her family and friends.”

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson said: “Marjory was one of the first people I met when I joined the Conservative Party.

“She was a bubbly, enthusiastic, warm-hearted woman whose energy was infectious.

“We will all miss her terribly, not least her colleagues in the North Lanarkshire association to whom she was so devoted.”
