Final chance to give OAPs a Merry Xmas

Christmas cheer for elderly

- Lynn Love

The Wishaw community have been pledging their support for our Christmas campaign.

Kind- hearted people and town businesses have been getting behind our ‘# WishawWishes: Our Elderly a Merry Christmas’ project in the hope of bringing some Christmas cheer to pensioners.

And it is the last chance for you to make your pledge or donation by Christmas Eve.

Pupils at Morningside Primary have pledged to spend more time with their elderly family members over the Christmas period.

Ten-year-old Harrison Kerr said: “My gran Tracey just lives on her own, so every Christmas we go over and keep her company and take her food.

“I know she likes to watch Christmas films so I’m going to make sure I spend time and watch a few with her.”

Little Sophie Brown said she enjoys spending time with her papa.

She added: “He’s just on his own now so I guess he must get bored sometimes. I try to go and see him every week.

“I think we are going to have dinner with him on Christmas day.”

The Wishaw Press have teamed up with Wishaw councillor Rosa Zambonini to make Christmas one to remember for the elderly.

We are looking for generous people to donate items that could be used to make a special Christmas parcel for a pensioner.

Items that can be donated include crosswords, puzzle books, reading books, perfume, aftershave, miniatures (to toast in the New Year), toiletries, hats/scarves, chocolates, shortbread, mince pies and anything else you think might make them smile.

If you can’t afford to make a donation we are asking that you make a pledge to spend time or offer to help someone in need over the festive period.

Councillor Zambonini said: “Christmas is a time when people feel at their most vulnerable and lonely.

“This appeal is a time for people to give a little back to some of our lovely elderly residents who have made this town what it is. “Every little thing truly will help.” Wishaw Press reporter Lynn Love said: “Last year’s Christmas appeal for kids at Wishaw General was a huge success. We donated hundreds of toys to Wishaw General Hospital with the help of the local community.

“This year, we wanted to do something a bit different.

“When we read the stats from Age UK, we decided we would do something to benefit pensioners in our area.

“It’s sad to think that so many of them spend Christmas alone and don’t receive any gifts. “It’s heart-breaking. “We really hope the Wishaw community will get behind this project and help us make Christmas special for those in need.”

Donations can be handed in to Aroma Cafe, Stewarton Street, The Avenue Cafe, Main Street and Martin’s Barbers, Main Street. Businesses and shops can help by providing left- over stock, and we require wrapping paper, gift bags and sticky tape.
