Is my car eligible for a scappage scheme?

-

We are considering buying a new Volkswagen Golf or Nissan Leaf. Do manufacturer scrappage schemes apply to either of these cars and, if so, how much should we expect to save? John Adams WHAT CAR? SAYS…

Both of these models qualify for scrappage scheme discounts; you’ll get £2000 off a Leaf and £4000 off a Golf.

However, it’s always worth checking how much discount you could get on a new car without buying on scrappage. In many cases, you’re likely to get more money off by negotiating a discount, although if you don’t like to haggle, you can get a fair reduction in price by buying at Target Price or lower via the What Car? New Car Buying website (whatcar.com/new-car-deals).

By using our website, you could save more than £5000 (22%) on a Leaf in Visia trim, taking the price down from £27,290 to £21,197. So, even if you want to scrap your old car, you’d be better off buying at a discount and selling to a scrapyard privately.

Savings on a Golf aren’t as big; the best discount currently stands at 16%, that being for a 1.4 TSI GTE (plug-in hybrid) with a DSG automatic gearbox, taking the price down from £31,110 to £26,174.

However, if you’re looking for a cheaper model, such as the petrol 1.0 TSI SE, the discount drops to 11%, equating to a saving of £2080 on its £20,075 list price. In this case, taking advantage of Volkswagen’s scrappage scheme would net you the bigger saving.
