Watkins earns City more cash

-

OLLIE Watkins’ late substitute appearance to win his fifth England cap earned Exeter City another £75,000.

The 25-year-old replaced Tammy Abraham in stoppage time on Tuesday night in what was a disappointing 1-1 draw at Wembley against Hungary.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute when Luke Shaw was penalised for a high challenge on Loic Nego and Roland Sallai sent Jordan Pickford the wrong way from the spot, before John Stones levelled before the break after Tyrone Mings and Declan Rice touched on Phil Foden’s free-kick.

Gareth Southgate’s side chased a winner, but it never came, and the Aston Villa forward came off deep into stoppage time to replace the Roma striker who had picked up a knock.

While only on the pitch for a matter of minutes, as a result of Torquay-born Watkins - coming on, Exeter City, where he came through the academy, will receive more cash as a result of the sale of the striker to Brentford, with £75,000 more banked for a substitute appearance in a competitive game.

Exeter City FC receive 15 per cent of the following potential additional payments to Brentford from Aston Villa as part of addons agreed when he left St James Park back in 2017 to join the Bees.

It means the Grecians have picked up £150,000 in the past week as Watkins also came on as a substitute in Saturday’s 5-0 win in Andorra.

Ben Chilwell, Bakary Saka, Abraham, James Ward-Prowse and Jack Grealish all scored as England made light work of Andorra.

Watkins came on as an 80th minute substitute for the Three Lions in that game.
