Dairy farm earns global green award
ACORNISH farm championing sustainable methods is one of the first in Europe to earn a brace of world-class certifications.
The herd of dairy cattle and flock of laying hens at Treen Farm, near Land’s End, are now Certified Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) by the respected international certifier, A Greener World (AGW).
A suite of labels only recently launched in the UK, following success in countries including South Africa, the United States and Central America, the fifth generation farm’s 25 Guernsey organic cows have also been awarded Certified Grassfed by AGW.
Wayne Copp, executive director of AGW UK, commented: “We are thrilled to partner with Treen Farm in celebrating their farm, and our growing family of farms in the UK.
“It has never been more critical for farmers to be fully understood by consumers, and we are honoured to support this through an uncomplicated, independent and credible certification marque for labelling that can be trusted to mean what is says on that label: Grass-fed and Animal Welfare Approved.”
Run by Chris and Paula Hall, the 150-acre Treen Farm is nestled at the top of Penberth Valley, stretching across to Treen Cliff, Treryn Dinas and the world-famous Logan Rock, all Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The flock of hens is allowed to roam and forage on well-managed pastures, while the cows graze the species-rich grassland. The farm uses rotational grazing practices and sustainable farming techniques, which results in lower environmental impact and a higher quality product.
One of a portfolio of certifications offered by AGW, the Certified Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) label verifies that animals are raised outdoors on pasture or range in accordance with world-renowned welfare standards using sustainable agriculture methods on an independent farm. Certified Grassfed by AGW is an optional, additional accreditation for AWA-approved farms raising cattle, sheep, goats or bison in line with AGW’s high animal welfare standards and adhering to a 100% grass-fed feeding protocol.
What Treen Farm has achieved is nothing short of inspirational for all UK producers WAYNE COPP
Mr Copp added: “Treen Farm’s certifications from A Greener World recognise loud and clear that high standards of animal welfare and environmental management are not only good for farmed livestock and the planet – but that labelling with our seal makes good commercial sense in speaking clearly and directly to consumers seeking food they can feel good about.
“What Treen Farm has achieved is nothing short of an inspiration for all forward-thinking UK producers.”
