... and things are looking up for Tally the very rare turtle

-

ONE of the world’s rarest sea turtles caught up in the wrath of Storm Arwen is on the mend.

So much so, she could soon be flown back home to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle - nicknamed Tally after the beach where she stranded - was found thousands of miles away from her usual habitat. She had been swept away from the Gulf of Mexico to the much less sunny shores of north Wales.

Since her sudden arrival in the region, she has been getting specialist care at the Anglesey Sea Zoo. Now, several months on, she is almost ready to head home.

In November, when gusts of heavy wind ripped across the UK, marine rescue teams scrambled to reports that a rare and non-native animal had washed ashore on the coastline near Rhyl.

Thankfully, after a few weeks, it was confirmed Tally had left “critical care” would likely make a full recovery. She remains supported by the Anglesey-based professionals who hope she’ll soon be strong enough to survive in the wild ocean again.

A post on social media by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, accompanied by a video clip, read: “Remember the Kemp’s Ridley turtle that was rescued by BDMLR late last year at Talacre, north Wales?”

“Here she is now over with our colleagues at Anglesey Sea Zoo who have been doing a fab job rehabilitating her since she was picked up. She’s looking a lot better (and bigger!) now.”

It ended by saying that, when she is ready, the team there will be arranging for her to go back to the Gulf of Mexico for release.

Anglesey Sea Zoo runs a voluntary Marine Animal Rescue facility to attend to any stranded or injured marine animals.
