Hollywood’s thanks less than £2k

FILMING for a Hollywood movie closed a busy Cardiff road for two days – but the city council was paid less than £2,000 for its part in making it possible.

Mark Wahlberg movie Infinite turned part of central Cardiff into the set of a blockbuster movie last month with NYPD cars and gunfire all spotted as a major scene from the upcoming blockbuster was filmed.

As a result Newport Road was closed from the junction of Fitzalan Place to the junction of City Road for two days.

A number of scenes were filmed which included gunfire, police cars in a ram raid, and an Aston Martin sports car flipping over the central reservation.

We asked Cardiff council through a Freedom of Information request how much it was paid to close the road.

In the request we asked them to specify how much they were paid to close the road from midnight on Saturday, October 25, until Tuesday, October 29, at 6am.

The council said it was paid £1,450 for a temporary road closure licence. It was also paid £250 plus VAT for a film permit.

The movie was shot in various locations across the UK but a “major sequence” was filmed in Cardiff.

Not everybody was pleased with the filming as many residents complained about the traffic problems and diversion the filming caused.

At the time the filming was announced a spokesman for Cardiff council said: “The fact that Cardiff has been chosen as one of the filming locations in the UK for this film is great news for the city.”
