Pensioner killed herself after churchgoer dispute

-

A PENSIONER hanged herself after becoming involved in an argument with a member of the congregation at the church she attended.

Wendy Green, 72, was found dead at her home in Newport after neighbours became concerned when they hadn’t heard from her in two days.

At the time of her death Ms Green had been living with depression and bipolar disorder as well as anxiety caused by her health and by a dispute she had with a fellow churchgoer at Newport Cathedral, a coroner was told at an inquest hearing at Newport Coroners’ Court yesterday.

On July 23 last year the police were called to Ms Green’s address in Friars Road after neighbours became concerned for her welfare.

After receiving no response from knocking the door and looking around the property the police forced entry and discovered Ms Green hanging in the bathroom. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination gave an official cause of death as suspension by a ligature.

Gwent coroner Wendy James said: “From the evidence before me it’s clear Wendy had health worries and was anxious about the incident at the church and the impending meeting and involvement of the police.

“It’s apparent that while home alone Wendy has become overwhelmed by anxiety and hung herself with the deliberate intention of ending her own life.”

A conclusion of suicide was recorded.
