Questions on tragic player’s health advice

A CORONER has asked for clarification on the healthcare advice given to an amateur footballer with a heart condition who collapsed on the pitch and later died.

A pre-inquest review was held into the death of 33-year-old Mitchell Joseph at Swansea Civic Centre on Friday and was attended by members of his family and fiancee Laura Davies.

Mr Joseph was playing as a a full-back with St Joseph’s AFC in Swansea when he collapsed approximately 30 minutes into the side’s game against Maltsters Sports on Saturday, January 13.

He was later taken to Morriston Hospital and was worked on for two hours by doctors but could not be saved.

Mr Joseph had a pre-existing heart condition and had an operation for a leaking valve in May 2017 after a heart murmur was discovered by his doctor in 2011.

Coroner Colin Phillips told the inquest: “The main concern is how his condition was managed from the outset. He is a young man and sport was his lifestyle choice. What advice was given to him?”

Representatives from Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board were in attendance and will now prepare further reports on how Mr Joseph’s healthcare was managed.

There will now be a further preinquest review into the carpenter’s death, which is scheduled to take place in February or March.
