UWTSD celebrates excellent results in the Times Good University Guide

-

UWTSD is celebrating being placed first in the UK for student satisfaction in teaching quality in Business Studies in the Sunday Times and Times Good University Guide 2019.

Employability is a key focus at the Business School in UWTSD at both the Swansea and Carmarthen campuses, with innovative learning and industry collaboration creating more opportunities for students to enhance their employability prospects after graduation. This unique approach of bringing students, academics and businesses together enables them to explore ideas and create opportunities for the development of new businesses, products and services.

An applied, employment-based approach is at the heart of all programmes. Innovative student-led approaches to learning are delivered by professionals and academics who all have experience in industry and understand the real world.

Roger Maidment, dean of the Faculty of Business and Management, said: “The university is committed to finding as many opportunities for students to study in as many ways as possible – from traditional campusbased provision to online and blended learning, but also via community-based outreach provision. Our many programmes are an excellent example of how UWTSD continues to fulfil its mission of ‘transforming education, transforming lives.’”

All courses are designed to instil in graduates the attributes desired by employers, for example, innovation, creativity, an enterprising mindset and responsiveness to unexpected events or tasks.

First-year Business Management students are tasked with helping local charities to raise awareness of their work and fundraising.

Programme director Beth Cummings said: “This is a unique way of introducing students to the course – of encouraging them to get to know and trust each other. They also have to immediately learn how to work on a live project and to recognise and understand the type of skills required for their initiatives to succeed.”

At a recent event, organised at Swansea’s Unit Nineteen, BA Business Management student Sam DymockBrown said: “Organising the event meant that we had to co-ordinate our classmates and interact with the whole group. We had to think outside the box to make this evening fun.”

Radu Scinteie added: “The lecturers have been interactive, pushing you to engage with others in different situations – it’s focused on teamworking.”

Students are also given the opportunity to specialise in a particular discipline, such as marketing, human resource management, finance and accounting, and also to obtain accreditation to a range of professional bodies including the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

A recent collaboration between UWTSD and Ducere Global Business School has launched a Wales-Ducere Office, within the university’s Faculty of Business and Management, which will manage the delivery of exciting new UG programmes, delivered fully online.

Ducere is an Australian-based online education organisation offering courses in business and management. The portfolio of BA programmes in Applied Business, with three pathways (management, marketing and entrepreneurship), will be delivered online via a sophisticated and well-supported virtual learning environment full-time, over three years or fast-tracked over two years.

The Global Leaders Faculty will provide relevant and applied knowledge for every module and the delivery will be further supported by a network of academic staff and a student support team to foster a sense of community and belonging among the students.

UWSD also offers Skills for the Workplace programmes. The Certificate of Higher Education Skills for the Workplace, BA Leadership and Management Skills for the Workplace are unique courses which are reaching into communities across south Wales to help people gain the skills needed by employers.

It is a flexible programme, which is offered in the evenings and weekends to enable students to balance their work and family commitments, while also being able to study for a university qualification.
