Top-selling 225p/kg (£91 40.5kg) from SE Gamble, 221p/kg (£90.50 41kg) from HG Bendall and (£92.80 42kg) from JV & RJ Williams, also 220p/kg (£93.20 42kg) from B Tango.

Heavies to 219p/kg (£100.80 46kg) from PC Jenkins. Top price per head at £101.80 49kg from TW & BE Jones. 36kg weights to 216p/kg from TT & EJ Griffiths. 32kg to 209p/kg (£67 32kg) from HJ Morris.

Smaller Welsh lambs to 203p/kg (£59 29kg) from B Davies.

Please note all lambs must be tagged before they are brought into the market and completed movement licence must travel with the lambs/ewes for presentati­on on arrival.

Cull Sheep

755 Cull sheep sold to a fast trade and an improvemen­t of £8-£10 on the week.

Suffolk X to £113 from DA Evans & Partners and £110 from PW Maddocks.

Not so much strength on offer today, and no best continenta­ls. Best of the mules to £87.50 from OJ & KE Harris, who also topped the hill-bred ewes at £64 for Speckles.

A lot of hill-bred ewes on offer, the stronger end £60-plus, plenty mid-£50s. Only the plainest under £35.

Rams to £95 for Welsh/Cheviots from WTP & EA Rees.

Rearing Calves

Reduced numbers, with just 39 forward, but a good-quality entry saw trade maintained at recent levels.

The day’s top price of £405 was achieved twice for Penylan Farms Ltd once for a Blue Bull and once for a similar heifer. Whilst these calves were over two months old, a lovely run of one-month-old Blues from VJ Thomas & Son sold well, with the bulls £290-£325 and heifers £215-£270.

A handful of native breeds led by a Hereford X Shorthorn heifer from DW & GL Charles at £260 and an Angus heifer from Penylan Farms Ltd at £210.

The strongest dairy bulls are ever dearer at £130 to £158, the top price obtained for DG & GN Watts second quality £80 to £95.

Breeding Cattle

A useful entry of 14 cows and calves which sold to a top of £1,520 twice for five-year-old Stabiliser cows with two/three-month-old steer calves from GO & L Williams, Talybont on Usk. Others in the same consignmen­t sold at £1,420, £1,370 and £1,350.

Belted Galloway cows with Saler X calves from RJ Parsons, Abergavenn­y, sold to £990 (83 months with two-month-old heifer calf ).

Stirks/Young Stores

56 forward to meet a slower trade than of late, top-selling of £680 for a 10-month-old Charolais Steer from Messrs Griffiths Bros, Senghenydd, and at the same money six Limousin X steers from G Whittingto­n, Trellech Grange.

B Johnson sold to £660 and R Edwards & Partners to £630 (Hereford 11/13 months).

Heifers also topped at £680, from JG Thomas, selling Angus X, 12 months old, J & ME Price, Craswall, sold Angus X 13 months at £600 and 11/12 months Charolais at £610.
