THE electric version of the Hyundai Ioniq is the cheapest car to run in Britain, according to an online energy comparison website.

The battery powered Hyundai has come out on top of a list of thousands of cars evaluated by sust-it – an independent organisation set up to advise consumers.

With an energy rating of 47.38g/km the Ioniq EV, which has a range of 174 miles, costs 2.85 pence per mile to run – or £341.56 a year.

Sust-it, which rates the energy efficiency of thousands of products ranging from fridge-freezers to the carbon footprint of holiday travel, calculates the running costs of vehicles by the amount of energy they use over 12,000 miles a year.

For electric vehicles it takes account of the CO2 emissions produced during recharging.

The most fuel-efficient petrol model is the Suzuki Celerio city car which costs £841.95 a year to run or 7.02 pence per mile.

Top diesel model is the Peugeot 208 1.6 Blue HDi with stop/start which has an official fuel return of 94.2mpg giving it a CO2 rating of 79g/km and costing 5.98 pence per mile, £718.11 a year.

At the other end of the scale comes the Lamborghini Diablo which costs a whopping £6,000.84 a year to run with an average fuel economy of just 11mpg and a CO2 figure of 590g/km.
