Coldplay conjure up a second night of Magic

-

COLDPLAY rocked fans in Cardiff for a second night in a row.

The band completed their twonight stay in Cardiff with another sell-out night at the Principality Stadium yesterday.

Fans arrived from all across the world to see the gig.

Frontman Chris Martin had won over the hearts of the Welsh audience on Tuesday by telling the fans who had braved the rain: “We saw all you had to go through the rain and the queues. Don’t think we don’t understand and appreciate it because we do and it means the world to us.”

But for the second night, the sun shone and the roof was open.

It had been 17 years since the band last performed in Wales.

To mark their return, fans shared on Twitter images of their £6 tickets from June 22, 2000, when Coldplay played Clwb Ifor Bach on Cardiff’s Womanby Street.

Martin told fans: “We haven’t been in Wales for a long, long time and that’s cos we’ve been rehearsing for 17 years to make the best show we’ve done.”

They performed hits including Clocks, Fix You, Viva La Vida, Magic, Paradise and Charlie Brown.

Julie Jenkins described the gig as “the most amazing night ever. What a show.” Carla Bailey wrote on the WalesOnline Facebook page that she “loved every minute”.

The band ended Tuesday’s gig with a rendition of the Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, led by two Welsh singers.

Martin told fans that the anthem was an extra to their normal gig.

“Because we’re in Wales, because we’re in the Millennium Stadium [sic], we had a favour to ask of you. That’s that we sang 22 songs for you, we wondered if you’d sing one for us.”

He said that the anthem was a “great song that we didn’t write” before welcoming Elin Hughes and James Jones onto the stage.

Martin took to the piano while he led the audience in a spine-tingling rendition of the anthem.

Elin, an aspiring singer from Llanybydder in Carmarthenshire, who is studying at the University of Wales Trinity St David in Cardiff, said she jumped at the chance.

“I didn’t hesitate for a second,” said Elin. “I didn’t have time to think about it or to get nervous, I just knew I really wanted to do it.

“It was just a normal day up until that point, but then I had to leave uni at 2.30pm to go to the stadium for a sound-check.

“I’ve been a huge Coldplay fan for years so it was absolutely amazing to have the opportunity to perform with them.”

James said he was on his way to the gig anyway when he got the call asking him to take part.
